Canton, NY – Selena Tasli finished the day 6-for-7 with four runs and drove in three runs to lead the SUNY Canton softball team to a 15-14 and 9-6 sweep of SUNY Potsdam in the Roos home-opening doubleheader on Tuesday.
Madison Austin produced a 2 RBI walk-off single to lead Canton to a win in the opener before
Kayla Chavarri homered, reached base four times, and earned a win in the nightcap.

HOW IT HAPPENED
GAME 1 – BOX SCORE
- The opener was a high scoring affair that saw the teams combine for 29 runs on 29 hits. The teams each had five runs over the first two innings with the Bears opening a 7-5 lead after three frames.
- Canton added three runs in the fourth to take their first lead of the game at 8-7 heading to the fifth. The Bears tied it with one in the eighth and Canton held an 11-10 lead after six innings. Potsdam knotted the game at 11 apiece with one run in the seventh as the teams headed to extras.
- In extra innings in softball the final out of the previous inning is put on second base for the international tiebreaker rule. Potsdam brought three runners across, two of which were unearned in their at-bats in the eighth.
- Alaina Beane produced an RBI single, Angelina LoPiccolo walked in a run and Austin came up clutch with a 2 RBI walk-off single through the right side as the Roos won a thriller.
- Tasli was a perfect 4-for-4 at the plate in the opener scoring three times and driving in three more. Mackenzie Currie and Jordan Knapp both went 3-for-5 with two runs and an RBI each.
- LoPiccolo, Austin and Beane had two hits each with LoPiccolo driving in a game-high four runs.
- Beane earned her first win of the season giving up 14 runs, only four of which were earned, with two strike outs and a walk.
- Anna Brown was credited with the loss for Potsdam tossing 1.2 innings in relief giving up three earned runs with a strike out and two walks.
GAME 2 – BOX SCORE
- The Roos jumped out to a quick 4-0 lead after one inning in the nightcap behind an RBI each from Austin and Currie as well as a pair of runs scoring on wild pitches.
- Canton extended the lead to 5-0 with a Knapp RBI base hit in the second.
- Potsdam got one back in the third and two more in the top of the fifth before the Roos added two more in the fifth.
- The Bears looked to make a late rally with three runs in the seventh before Canton sealed the win and the sweep.
- Chavarri helped her own cause going 1-for-1 with a two-run homer and also drew three walks. The home run was the first of the season and fourth of her career for the senior. On the mound Chavarri threw a complete game with seven strike outs and three walks allowing six earned runs.
- Austin and Tasli had two hits and a run each with Austin also driving in a run. Currie also drove in a pair of runs for the hosts.
- Brown took the loss for the Bears allowing five earned runs with four walks in two innings.
WHAT'S NEXT?
The softball team is scheduled to open North Atlantic Conference (NAC) action on Saturday when they visit Cazenovia College for a doubleheader at 1 p.m.
