Olsen Breaks 100 Career Goal Mark as Roos Down Mariners 23-19 on Senior Day

Abreu Sets NCAA D-III Single-Season & Single-Game Ground Balls Records

Canton, NY – Hunter Olsen eclipsed the 100-career goal milestone and Noel Abreu shattered the single-game ground balls program record as the SUNY Canton men's lacrosse team earned a crucial 23-19 win v. Maine Maritime Academy on Senior Day on Sunday.

With the win the Roos improve to 5-2 in league play and currently own the tiebreaker for the three seed with Maine Maritime with one game remaining in the NAC regular season.

The Roos honored their graduating players Chris McCann, Trent Dow, Zack LaFave, Israel Akande, Hunter Olsen and Noel Abreu in a postgame ceremony.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Roos outscored Maine Maritime 6-4 in the opening quarter and doubled up the Mariners 8-4 in the second quarter to take a convincing 14-8 lead into intermission.
  • Canton scored twice in the final 13 seconds of the first quarter behind a dominant performance from Abreu in the face off circle.
  • MMA got within 17-12 at the end of the third quarter but t he Roos scored five of the first six goals in the fourth quarter to open a 22-13 advantage en route to the win.
 
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
  • Olsen led all players with 11 points on five goals and six assists and added six ground balls. The senior captain now has 103 career goals and 90 assists for 193 career points.
  • Zack LaFave had an impressive outing with six goals, one assists and eight ground balls. Alex Jacobs recorded five goals in a balanced offensive attack.
  • Abreu was dominant winning 33 of 46 face offs and registering a game-high 25 ground balls. He also added a career-high two assists. Abreu shattered the SUNY Canton NCAA D-III era program record with 25 ground balls, breaking the previous mark of 16 he set earlier this season (4/13/22 v. SUNY Poly) along with Jack Keenan '14 (4/25/14 v. Keuka). He also set the single-season program record for ground balls (98)  breaking the previous mark of Brandon Rodee '18 in 2018 (92).
  • Austin Mesler finished with three goals and three assists, Logan McCargar tallied two goals and one assist and Caeden Goodnough chipped in a goal and two assists. Kyle Fingar finished with a goal and assist and Dow added a helper.
  • Alex Stevens paced the Mariners with five goals and two assists and Zeke Tocci added three goals and two assists.
  • Sam Servati made 12 saves in the win, while Zach McCarth turned aside 12 shots in defeat.
  • The Roos dominated ground balls (68-43) and face offs (33-13), while going 4-for-7 on extra man opportunities.

The Roos have a quick turnaround as they close out the regular season when they visit SUNY Cobleskill on Monday at 4 p.m.
