Knapp’s Grand Slam, Chavarri’s Strong Outing Lead Softball to Split v. Cazenovia

Canton, NY – Jordan Knapp hit a walk-off grand slam in an 11-1 run-rule win and Kayla Chavarri struck out 11 batters as the Roos earned a split v. Cazenovia in a North Atlantic Conference (NAC) softball doubleheader on Friday.
After winning the opener 11-1 in six innings the Roos fell 18-2 in five innings in the nightcap.

HOW IT HAPPENED
 
GAME 1 – BOX SCORE
  • Friday's opener started as a pitcher's duel with Kayla Chavarri sitting down the Wildcats in order over the first three innings. Defensively, Cazenovia turned three double plays in the first three innings including a strike them out throw them out.
  • Caitlin Kelleher broke up the no-hitter for Chavarri with a double down the left field line in the top of the fourth. Chavarri had seven strike outs through four innings on the mound.  
  • The Roos broke things open with five runs on six hits in the bottom of the fourth. Mackenzie Currie started things off with an RBI single through the left side to score Angelina LoPiccolo. Alaina Beane followed with an RBI base hit to center plating Sophia Harris.
  • The visitors loaded the bases with two outs in the top of the fifth, but Chavarri held the Wildcats off the scoreboard ending the inning with a strike out.
  • Sixty of Chavarri's first eighty pitches were strikes. Cazenovia finally got on the board in the top half of the sixth with one run.
  • LoPiccolo scored Chavarri on an RBI ground out and Madison Austin singled up the middle to score Mikula in the sixth. With two outs and the bases loaded and the Roos just needing two more runs for the run-rule win Jordan Knapp hit a walk-off grand slam.
  • Knapp led the Roos with a home run, two walks, two runs and 4 RBI. LoPiccolo had two hits and 2 RBI, while Austin and Tasli finished with two hits and an RBI each. Harris also went 2-for-3 with two runs.
  • Caitlin Kelleher led the Wildcats going 2-for-3 with a run.
  • Chavarri was tremendous on the mound throwing the complete game with a season-high 11 strike outs and allowing just one run.
  • Serafina French took the loss allowing five runs with four strike outs and three walks in four innings.
 
GAME 2 – BOX SCORE
  • The Cazenovia bats came alive in the nightcap as they scored 10 runs in the opening inning, added two in the second and six in the third on their way to an 18-2 win in five innings in the nightcap.
  • Currie led the Roos going 2-for-3 with a run, while LoPiccolo, Harris, Knapp, Beane and Chavarri all had one hit each.
  • Olivia Simone went 3-for-4 with 3 RBI, Kelleher was 3-for-4 with three runs and 2 RBI and Sarah Penny helped her own cause with two hits, three runs and 4 RBI.
  • Penny picked up the win for Cazenovia allowing two runs with four strike outs and three walks in five innings.
  • Beane took the loss for Canton giving up 10 earned runs with six strike outs and five walks in five innings.
 
WHAT'S NEXT?
The softball team is back in action on Saturday when they host SUNY Cobleskill for a single game beginning at 3 p.m.
