Softball Extends Win Streak to Six with Sweep v. Wildcats

Utica, NY – The SUNY Canton softball team extended its winning streak to six games as it opened its North Atlantic Conference (NAC) slate with a 9-6 and 7-6 sweep of SUNY Poly on Friday at Mohawk Valley Community College.

HOW IT HAPPENED
 
GAME 1 – BOX SCORE
  • After three scoreless innings in the opener the Roos got on the board first when Selena Tasli was hit by a pitch bringing across Mackenzie Currie.
  • The Wildcats responded with four runs in the bottom of the fourth, all of which were unearned and scored with two outs after an error.
  • In a back-and-forth game the Roos tied things up with three runs in the fifth. Jordan Knapp singled home Madison Austin, Sophia Padilla-Gundersen walked in Sophia Harris and Currie scored after Tasli drew a walk.
  • The Roos took a 5-4 lead in the sixth when Knapp reached on a throwing error to score Currie.
  • Poly responded with a run in the bottom of the sixth to tie things up once again.
  • The Roos put up a four spot in the top of the seventh. Padilla-Gundersen scored on a wild pitch, Harris singled home both Tasli and LoPiccolo and Currie plated Harris with a base hit.
  • The Wildcats would get one back in the bottom of the seventh and had three hits overall in the frame, but Kayla Chavarri shut the door for the win.
  • Chavarri threw a complete game allowing two earned runs with six strike outs and six walks.
  • Joy Stevens took the loss in relief throwing one inning allowing four unearned runs with two strike outs and a walk.
  • Currie led the Roos going 4-for-5 with three runs and an RBI. Harris went 2-for-4 with two runs and 2 RBI and LoPiccolo also had a pair of hits.
 
GAME 2 – BOX SCORE
  • SUNY Canton scored a pair of runs in the first inning of Game 2 on a Currie RBI ground out and a Knapp RBI single.
  • Poly responded with three runs in the bottom of the inning before Canton tallied three of their own in the second.
  • LoPiccolo had an RBI single and Austin used a base hit to score two. The Wildcats got one back in the bottom of the frame as the Roos led 5-4 after two innings.
  • The game proved to be high scoring in the early innings as Poly added two more in the third to open a 6-5 advantage.
  • They would hold that until the seventh inning before Natalie Miner scored on a wild pitch. Alaina Beane, who was also pitching the nightcap, helped her own cause with what proved to be the game-winning RBI single scoring Chavarri.
  • After giving up a walk to start the bottom of the ninth, Beane got a ground out and then Currie gunned down a runner on the base paths trying to get to third with one out. Beane then closed out the game with a strike out.
  • Beane earned her third win of the season going the distance scattering six earned runs over seven innings with four strike outs and three walks.
  • Caitlin Reilly took the loss for Poly allowing four earned runs with a walk and five strike outs.
  • LoPiccolo, Knapp and Beane led the Canton bats with two hits each.
 
WHAT'S NEXT?
The Roos and Wildcats were originally scheduled for a single game on Saturday at 1 p.m. but that has been postponed due to rain in the forecast throughout the day in Utica. SUNY Canton is next scheduled to visit SUNY Potsdam in a non-conference doubleheader on Thursday at 3 p.m.
