Madison Leary had a strong performance stopping a career-high 17 shots, but host Utica University outscored the SUNY Canton women's lacrosse team 10-4 in the second half to earn a 15-11 victory in non-conference action on Wednesday.

HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Roos jumped out to a 5-3 lead after the opening quarter. Maddy Caron scored a pair of goals 23 seconds apart with Utica a player up. Samantha Dayter, Stephanie Thayer, and Casey Pelton also scored in the quarter.
- Dayter netted two more goals in the second quarter as SUNY Canton opened a three-goal lead at 7-4 with 6:26 left in the opening half after Dayter scored on a free-position shot.
- The Roos turned the ball over in the final minute and the Pioneers scored with five seconds left to get within 7-5 at intermission.
- Utica tallied a pair of goals out of intermission to knot things up at seven apiece. Dayter answered with her fourth of the game to put the Roos back on top.
- The Pioneers received back-to-back goals three minutes apart to take their first lead of the game at 9-8.
- After another Dayter tally, Samantha DeCondo caged back-to-back goals 15 seconds apart as Utica led 11-9 after three quarters.
- Caron got the Roos within one 2:44 into the fourth quarter on her 16th goal of the season.
- Addison Green netted consecutive scores 44 seconds apart to put the Pioneers up three. Dayter added her sixth of the game with 4:54 remaining keeping Canton within striking distance.
- The Roos won the ensuing two draws, but Canton turnovers led to a pair of Utica goals as the hosts held on for the win. Â

INSIDE THE NUMBERS
- Dayter led all players with six goals and four caused turnovers, while going a perfect 3-for-3 on free-position shots. Caron added three scores and picked up a team-high five draw controls. Pelton chipped in a goal and assist with Thayer recording the other goal.
- Leary's 17 saves upped her previous career-high of 12 saves at Clarkson on March 18, 2021.
- Emily Rossi paced Utica with four goals and two assists, while DeCondo added three goals and one assist. Ashley Guerra supplied two goals and two assists, Alyssa Drell added two goals, one assist and Addison Green chipped in a pair of scores.
- Lexi Scaccia picked up a game-high 10 draws for the Pioneers. Claire Frier made four saves in the win for Utica.
- Utica held the upper hand in shots on goal (32-15), ground balls (24-14) and draw controls (19-10). The Pioneers were 19-for-20 on clear attempts, while the Roos were 20-for-28.
