Dayter Sets Program Record for Single-Game Draw Controls

Plattsburgh, NY – Samantha Dayter and Maddy Caron combined for 12 goals as the SUNY Canton women's lacrosse team doubled up Plattsburgh State, 16-8, in the season-opener for both teams in snowy conditions on Wednesday.

Dayter recorded a remarkable 17 draw controls, which is the most by any player in a single game in NCAA Division III women's lacrosse this season. The 17 draw controls are a SUNY Canton women's lacrosse single-game program record. The previous high in a game for the Roos was 13 by Tressa Goolden on April 19, 2012.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • SUNY Canton jumped out to an early lead just 1:27 in when Dayter found Caron for the first goal of the season. Emma McLaughlin knotted the game at one apiece with just less than five minutes left in the first quarter. Lindsey Wunder scored an unassisted goal with 3:09 to play as the Roos led 2-1 after 15 minutes.
  • The hosts dominated play in the second quarter outscoring the Cardinals, 8-2. Hannah Reed got things started scoring a player down goal as she picked off a Plattsburgh pass deep in the Cardinals own end.
  • Dayter finished with four goals in the second quarter alone with Caron adding a pair. The Roos scored three times in the span of 29 seconds to move ahead 8-2 and then Caron and Stephanie Thayer tallied goals 13 seconds apart to give Canton a 10-2 advantage.
  • The Cardinals scored just before halftime off the stick of Kate Kennedy, but the Roos took a commanding 10-3 lead into break.
  • Canton scored the first two goals out of intermission to open a 12-3 lead as Plattsburgh never got closer than six the rest of the way.
 
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
  • Dayter put up a dominant performance leading all players in goals (8), assists (2) and draw controls (17). Dayter's eight goals on Wednesday were the most by a Roo since Robyn Carroll recorded nine on March 19, 2016.
  • Caron supplied four goals in her collegiate debut to go with three draw controls and three ground balls. Thayer chipped in two goals, while Reed and Wunder scored one each.
  • Caron, Shelby Roberts and Erin Grandaw led the Roos defensively causing two turnovers apiece. Madison Leary made eight saves in the win, while tallying a team-high four ground balls.
  • McLaughlin and Caitlin Nash led Plattsburgh with two goals each, while Emily Caoili had a goal and two assists.
  • Johanna Malone made eight saves while allowing 10 goals in the opening half and Alexa Cassidy turned aside five shots surrendering six scores after intermission.
  • The Roos held the upper hand in shots (35-18), shots on goal (29-16) and draw controls (22-6).
