Three Players Record Two Hits as Roos Open Season in Florida

Fort Myers, FL – Sophia Harris, Jordan Knapp and Madison Austin all recorded two hits each as the SUNY Canton softball team opened their 2022 season in Florida dropping a pair of games to Nazareth and Pitt Bradford on Sunday.

HOW IT HAPPENED
 
GAME 1 – BOX SCORE
  • Sophia Harris recorded the lone hit for the Roos in their season opener breaking up the no-hitter on a base hit to right field in the sixth inning.
  • Maddie Funk tossed a gem for Nazareth thoriwing a complete game allowing no earned runs with nine strike outs and two walks in the complete game effort.
  • Nazareth took a 2-0 lead on a 2 RBI double in the third inning. The Roos got within one as Abigail Sawyer reached on an error in the fifth.
  • The Golden Flyers added a pair of runs on a 2 RBI single in the fifth inning to secure the win.
  • Alaina Beane took the loss allowing three earned runs with five strike outs and three walks in six innings.
 
GAME 2 – BOX SCORE
  • Sunday's nightcap proved to be a high scoring affair with the Panthers getting out to a 4-0 lead after their at-bats in the third inning.
  • The Roos got on the board in the bottom half of the third when Angelina LoPiccolo plated Madison Austin on an RBI groundout.
  • Pitt Bradford added nine more runs in the fourth and fifth innings but the Roos responded with an eight spot in the bottom half of the fifth to keep within 13-10 after five innings.
  • Harris walked home Selena Tasli in the fourth. Knapp reached on an error to start the scoring in the fifth to plate LoPiccolo. Tasli was hit by a pitch to bring across Mackenzie Currie. The scoring continued when Sawyer reached on a fielder's choice scoring Knapp, Tasli scored on an Alexandria Mikula walk and Knapp brought home Mikula on an RBI single.
  • The Panthers added a pair of runs in the seventh inning for the 15-10 final.
  • Ashely Stein earned the win for Pitt Bradford giving up three earned runs with five strike outs and five walks in 4.1 innings.
  • Kayla Chavarri took the loss surrendering seven earned runs with three strike outs and four walks in 4.1 innings.
  • Knapp and Austin finished with two hits each, while Knapp and LoPiccolo drove in a pair of runs for the Roos.
 
WHAT'S NEXT?
The Roos are back in action on Monday when they take on Western Connectiut State and Central College at 9 and 11 a.m., respectively.
