Men’s Hockey Sends Seniors out with 7-4 Win v. Raiders

Canton, NY – Brady Morrison recorded his first hat trick and Jake Mayette finished with a goal and four assists as the SUNY Canton men's hockey team earned a convincing 7-4 win v. Rivier University on Senior Night on Saturday.

The Roos recognized their five seniors Sean Shepard (captain), Zach Ahola (assistant captain), Jake Mayette, Bailey Conklin and Brandon McCorriston in a pregame ceremony.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Rivier opened the scoring at 3:49 of the opening period when Zach Winslow converted with the skater advantage.
  • Canton knotted the game at one apiece on a power play of their own. Filip Jakobsson fed the puck from the right circle to Zac Sirota behind the Canton net. He played a quick pass out in front to Brady Morrison who put home a one-timer past Raider goaltender Luke Newell.
  • The hosts took their first lead of the game at 8:35 when Brendan Morrow and Noah Robinson skated 2-on-1 into the zone as Morrow found Robinson to his right who put it past Newell. Colton Sipperley also added an assist dishing the puck to a breaking Morrow into the offensive zone.
  • The Roos made it 3-1 at 10:55 of the opening period when Sipperley put home a loose puck at the far post off a Jarrod Croswell wrist shot from the point. Jake Mayette also picked up an assist on the play.
  • Canton concluded the first period scoring at 14:27 on the power play. Mayette and Sirota teamed up to get the puck out to Morrison at the point. His wrist shot made its way high through traffic as Sirota shielded Newell out in front as the shot went just inside the right post. The hosts held a 16-10 shots avantage and led 4-1 after one.
  • Rivier got one back just less than six minutes into the second off the stick of Jake Mecrones.
  • Canton extended the lead to 5-2 when Jakobsson skated towards net and played the puck back to Morrison at the point as he went top shelf to complete the hat trick. Mayette also added an assist on the score.
  • The Roos added an insurance goal at 12:11 of the middle period when Sam Martin lifted a back hander top shelf with Mayette and Lucas Roy picking up assists.
  • Canton closed out their scoring at the 17:56 mark of the second with Sean Shepard moving the puck forward to Mayette through the neutral zone.  He wristed a shot past the glove of Newell.
  • The Raiders added a pair of third period tallies from Milan Breczko and Jon Tavella for the 7-4 final.
 
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
  • Morrison, the rookie defenseman who entered tonight's game with one goal, recorded his first collegiate hat trick. Mayette, the senior from Madrid, had a monster Senior Night finishing with a game-high five points on a goal and four assists.
  • Sipperley recorded a goal and assist, while Jakobsson and Sirota tallied two apples apiece.
  • Tavella paced Rivier with a goal and assist.
  • The Roos more than doubled up Rivier on face offs, 35-17, while outshooting them 37-22.
  • Canton was 2-for-3 on the power play, while Rivier was 1-for-5.
 
WHAT'S NEXT?
This concludes the Roos regular season. They will await the seeding release for the GNAC Commissioner's Cup which is scheduled for next Friday (2/18) and Saturday (2/19) in Springfield, MA. Seedings are expected to be released on Monday.
