Roos Fight Back, Drop Close Game to Trinity

Northfield, VT – The SUNY Canton men's hockey team found themselves down 4-1 with just over half a period remaining and fought back to get within one goal.  Unfortunately, time ran out and the Roos dropped a 4-3 decision to Trinity College in the consolation game of the Northfield Savings Bank Holiday Tournament.

THE BASICS
  • Result: Trinity College 4, SUNY Canton 3
  • Location: Kreitzberg Arena – Northfield, VT
  • Records: Trinity College (5-5-0) | SUNY Canton (4-9-0)
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Defenseman Theodore Griffin opened the scoring at 16:46 of the first period.  Griffin ripped a shot through a screen and past freshman netminder Nate Hopkins to put the Bantams on top 1-0.
  • The Roos responded with a power play goal by sophomore Brendan Morrow at 3:27 of the first to tie the game at 1-1.  The goal was Morrow's fifth of the season and was assisted by senior Nic Herringer and junior Trevor Christopher.
  • Trinity regained the lead at 4:07 of the second period on a goal by Paul Selleck.  Hopkins made a terrific stop on a Jacob Smith breakaway, but Selleck was able to tuck the rebound past the Roos' goaltender.
  • Riley Patterson closed out the scoring in the second with a backhand shot that found the back of the net with just 38 seconds remaining in the period.
  • The Bantams extended their lead to 4-1 at 2:22 of the third on an Eamon Doheny goal.
  • The Roos converted their second power play goal of the afternoon as senior Matthew Headland scored his second goal in two nights, closing the scoring gap to 4-2 at 7:16 of the third.  Headland's slapshot from the top of the circle beat J.P. Mella and was assisted by Christopher and Herringer.
  • SUNY Canton called a timeout and pulled Hopkins with 53 seconds remaining in an attempt to close the gap further.  After a Bantams icing, Morrow won the faceoff back to freshman Evan Pringle who ripped a shot past Mella to get the Roos within one with just 10 seconds left.
  • Unfortunately, there was too little time remaining to even things up and the game finished with a final score of 4-3 in favor of the Bantams.
