Roos Drop Barnburner to D-I Stonehill

Potsdam, NY – SUNY Canton received goals from five different scorers but lost 7-5 to Division I independent Stonehill College on the second day of the North Country Tournament.
 
THE BASICS

HOW IT HAPPENED 
  • Stonehill's Frank Ireland scored a pair of goals giving the Skyhawks a 2-0 lead midway through the first period.  Senior Noah Robinson got the Roos back within one at 11:53 of the period and the score remained 2-1 at the end of one.
  • Two quick Stonehill goals staked them a 4-1 lead, including a power play goal by Max Pineo at 8:55 of the second period.  Senior Matthew Headland cut the lead in half just over three minutes later on a goal that was assisted by senior Nic Herringer and sophomore Filip Jakobsson.
  • In the third period, three goals in 30 seconds saw the Roos get within one goal, twice.  First Jakobsson scored at 5:03 of the third period, assisted by freshman Reilly McKinnon and sophomore Brady Morrison.  Then Thomas Horak put the Skyhawks back up by two, 20 seconds later.  And finally, sophomore Colton Sipperley cut the lead to one again, just 10 seconds after Horak's goal.  Sipperly's goal was assisted by junior Sebastien Paquette and senior Matt Passaretti.
  • Two special teams goals, one on the power play and one short handed, put Stonehill ahead 7-4.  Freshman Trystan Mughal's power play goal at 19:27 closed out the scoring.  Mughal's goal was assisted by freshman Jack Seamans and junior Trevor Christopher.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
  • In addition to the five separate goal scorers, seven Roos had an assist.  Jakobsson led all SUNY Canton scorers finishing with a goal and an assist.
  • Ireland led Stonehill with two goals and an assist.
  • Senior Filip Schlyter had 13 saves in the first period and a half while freshman Nate Hopkins finished with eight saves in his collegiate debut in relief.  Gavin FitzPatrick finished with 44 saves for the Skyhawks.
  • The Roos won the faceoff battle 37-36 and were 1/4 on the power play while Stonehill was 2/6 on the man advantage.

SUNY Canton travels up Route 11 to face rival SUNY Potsdam on Friday, December 9th at 7:00 p.m.
