Men’s Hockey Nearly Takes Lakers to OT, Fall 3-2 in Oswego Hockey Classic Consolation

Oswego, NY – SUNY Canton dominated the third period and had two shots ring off the post, but host Oswego State, who is receiving votes in the latest USCHO Top 15 poll, survived for a 3-2 win v. the Roos in the consolation game of the Oswego Hockey Classic on Sunday evening.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Lakers got on the board first at 8:25 of the opening period. Josh LeBlanc scored off a rebound from an initial shot from the blue line from Ryan Dickinson.
  • The Roos responded just over four minutes later when Jesse Farabee scored his second goal of the season with Brady Morrison and Carson Lanceleve picking up helpers on the play.
  • Oswego regained the lead just 21 seconds later at the 13:03 mark when Travis Broughman dangled around Filip Schlyter on a 1-on-0 breakaway.
  • The Lakers were whistled for a minor at 15:33 and then a major and disqualification at 16:34 as the Roos went on an extended power play with nearly a minute of 5-on-3. Canton produced three shots with the two skater advantage including a pair off the stick of Lanceleve. Brett Bannister also hit the pipe with the 5-on-4 advantage just before the end of the period but Oswego took a 2-1 lead into first intermission.
  • SUNY Canton's relentless attack paid off as they knotted the game at two apiece one minute into the middle period on the power play. Farabee scored his second goal of the night against his former team off a rebound with Matthew Headland and Jake Mayette picking up assists on the play with 34 seconds left on the major penalty.
  • The hosts regained the lead three minutes later when Garrett Clegg scored on a low shot past Schlyter. The Lakers took a 3-2 lead into second intermission.
  • Oswego was whistled for a penalty with one second left in the second period. The Roos had a bunch of grade A chances to start the third period nearly tying the game on multiple occasions. The Roos had four shots on the power play including two point blank outstanding saves from Laker goaltender Eric Green.
  • The Roos continued to dominate the third period and Morrison nearly scored his second goal of the game when his shot struck off the pipe just before the end of a Canton power play.
  • SUNY Canton pulled Schlyter for the extra skater with 47 seconds left and captain Sean Shepard had his shot ring off the post a he nearly tied the game.
  • The Roos dominated the third period outshooting the Lakers 11-4 but were unable to get a shot past Green to tie the game up as the hosts held on for the win.
 
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
  • Oswego held a slim 25-24 shots advantage for the game but dominated face offs, 36-16.
  • Schlyter posted 22 saves in the loss, while Green also made 22 saves in the win.
  • The Roos went 1-for-4 on the power play and were 6-for-6 on the penalty kill.

Schlyter was named to the All-Tournament Team for his performance in goal on Sunday.

The Roos are back in action on Friday when they visit Arcadia University at 7:30 p.m.
