Fitch Nearly Records Triple-Double in Overtime Loss v. Wildcats

Fitch Sets D-III Era Single Game Blocks Record, Jumps into Top 15 in NCAA D-III Career Blocks

Cazenovia, NY – Senior Andrew Fitch came up just one point short of a triple-double recording a career-high 11 blocks but the SUNY Canton men's basketball team fell 78-76 on the road in non-conference action in overtime at Cazenovia College on Tuesday.

Fitch's 11 blocks are an NCAA D-III era program record for the Roos. No one has had more blocks in a single game at SUNY Canton in at least the last 11 seasons.

THE BASICS
  • Result: Cazenovia 78 SUNY Canton 76 | 1 OT
  • Location: Upper Gym – Cazenovia, NY
  • Records: Cazenovia (5-9) | SUNY Canton (4-8)

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The hosts jumped out to an early 13-6 lead just over seven minutes in. The Wildcats continued to hold a seven point lead with just under eight minutes left in the opening half.
  • The Roos used a 16-5 run to take a 34-29 lead after a Juztin Chambers-Phillips three with 21 seconds left in the first. Cazenovia trimmed the deficit to 35-33 at intermission.
  • Danny Santana led the Roos with 11 first half points, while Chambers-Phillips had nine. Alan Wilmes paced the Wildcats with nine.
  • Canton opened their largest lead of the game at eight (48-40) just over five minutes into the second stanza after a Fitch old-fashioned three point play. The Roos continued to hold an eight point lead after another Chambers-Phillips trey with 11:30 to play.
  • The Roos led by seven after a Justin Omaga three ball, but Cazenovia rattled off an 8-0 run to take a 63-62 lead. Neither team would lead by more than two in the final five minutes of regulation.
  • With the game tied at 70 with 12 seconds left in the second half Thomas Jones took a jumper. However, Fitch did a nice job contesting the shot as the Roos would have one final chance.
  • Santana had a great look on a three from the right wing with two seconds left but his shot just hit the back rim as the teams would play to overtime.
  • Back-to-back buckets in the extra session put the hosts up by four with 1:08 to play. Santana answered with a jumper and the Roos got a stop defensively.
  • Santana drove on the final possession and kicked to Omaga in the corner but his game-winning three attempt was just off the mark as Cazenovia held on for the win.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS
  • Chambers-Phillips led all players with 22 points and added seven rebounds shooting 7-for-11 from the field, 3-for-5 from beyond the arc and 5-for-5 at the line. Santana chipped in 18 points and Peyton Olsen totaled 13 points and seven boards.
  • Fitch was just one point short of a triple-double with nine points, 13 rebounds and 11 blocks.
  • His 11 blocks are a career best as he previously blocked nine shots in a game on two different occasions. With his 11 blocks tonight Fitch jumped into a tie for 15th place in NCAA Division III career blocks (329).
  • Five different players scored in double figures for the Wildcats including Nate Klein (18), Jones (16), Amoni Clarke (15), Kobe Bogart (13) and Alan Willmes Jr. (10).
