Dreyer and Werner Post Five Kills Each as Volleyball Drops Opener at Alfred

Alfred, NY – Emily Dreyer and Cassidy Werner supplied five kills each but the SUNY Canton women's volleyball team fell 3-0 on the road at Alfred University on the opening day of the Saxon Classic on Friday.

HOW IT HAPPENED
 
  • The hosts jumped out to an early 9-3 lead in the opening set but Canton battled back to knot the frame at 11 apiece. Leading 20-18 the Saxons scored the final five points to take the first set, 25-18.
  • The Roos jumped out to a 7-3 lead in the second set, but Alfred went on an 8-1 run at one point to open a 14-10 advantage. Canton trimmed the deficit to 14-13 after a Dreyer kill but eight consecutive points helped Alfred take control of a 25-16 second set win.
  • The third set continued to show how quickly momentum can change in a game of runs. Alfred started out with a 5-0 lead before Canton battled back with six straight of their own for the lead. The hosts put away seven straight points to double up the Roos 12-6 and never looked back closing out the match 25-21.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
  • Dreyer and Werner led the Roos with five kills each. Sarah Balcom hit a team-best .667 with four kills and no errors on six attacks. Victoria Norton produced a .500 attack percentage with three kills and one error on four swings.
  • Alyssa Adams finished with four kills and five digs, while Michaella DeCapua dished out a team-best 11 assists. Peyton Nadeau chipped in with five digs, while Kay Carlson recorded a pair of aces.
  • Sarah Raeman and Honor Edmands paced the Saxons with nine kills each, while Darian Ortiz had 17 digs and Lucy McCredie finished with 26 assists.
 
WHAT'S NEXT?
The Roos will take on Penn State Behrend and SUNY Potsdam at 1 p.m. and 3 p.m., respectively, on the second day of the Saxon Classic on Saturday.
