Johnston Nets First Collegiate Goal as Thomas Doubles up Men’s Soccer, 4-2

Canton, NY – Carthage native Joey Johnston scored his first collegiate goal, but four unanswered scores lifted visiting Thomas College to a 4-2 North Atlantic Conference (NAC) win on Sunday evening in Canton.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Roos got on the board first in the 17th minute off a set piece. Connor Kelley played a free kick just inside midfield to Chris Cook on his right. Cook delivered a ball into the box as Ellis Sanchez ran onto it and just redirected the ball around a charging Jonathan LeClair and into the open net.  
  • Twenty minutes into the first half Dzihad Cecunjanin drew a foul in the box but the ball was not involved in the play as the Roos earned an indirect kick inside the box. Sanchez touched the ball and Agustin Nunez bent a shot that deflected off the Thomas wall in front of goal and just over the crossbar.
  • Canton continued to attack as on the ensuing corner kick Nick Savallo found Nunez whose initial shot was blocked. The rebound came right to Brandon McCorriston at the left post who tried to volley a shot that popped up and was saved by LeClair.
  • Minutes later Owen Kwong made an outstanding save fully extending diving out to his right saving a shot off the foot of Stefan Simmons from the top of the 18.  
  • Thomas evened the game at one apiece in the 41st minute on a great individual effort from Eric LaBrie. He dribbled through the Roos defense juking multiple Canton defenders and placed a left-footed shot into the right corner of net.
  • The Terriers took their first lead of the game just 85 seconds later off a loose ball on a throw in. Princiel Kunieki touched the ball onto Nicholas Garcia in the center of the box as he blasted a shot through traffic into the right corner of the net.
  • Thomas held a slim 5-4 shots on goal advantage taking a 2-1 lead into intermission.
  • The visitors continued to carry the momentum from their strong finish to the first half early in the second stanza.
  • Less than two minutes out of intermission Joshua Joseph played a nice cross in from the left side as Kunieki redirected it just inside the left post.
  • Just 44 seconds later Thomas tacked n a fourth goal. Jake Warn fed a ball up the right side near midfield to. Joseph. He played a beautifully timed pass in to Zenawi Bowen who just stayed onside. Bowen was one-on-one with Kwong finishing into the open net.
  • The Roos got one back in the 73rd minute on Johnston's first collegiate goal. Jason Hernandez through the ball into Ariel Enamorado from the near sideline. He played the ball back to Hernandez who sent a pass into the box connecting with Johnston at the far post who headed a shot back across the face of goal just inside the right post.
 
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
  • Sanchez's goal is his fourth of the season and fourth in as many games. He now has nine career tallies.
  • Kwong finished with four saves for Canton, while LeClair stopped four shots for the Terriers.
  • Thomas held a slim 8-7 shots on goal edge and 4-2 advantage in corner kicks.

The men's soccer team is back in action on Wednesday when they host Wells College in a non-league game at 5 p.m.
