SUNY Canton Overwatch Team Wins SUNY Esports Championship

Canton, NY – The SUNY Canton Overwatch team won SUNY Canton's first ever State University of New York (SUNY) Esports championship when it defeated Alfred State College on Monday evening in the Spring 2021 semester title match.
 
The Roos used a dominating performance to sweep the Pioneers, 3-0. The team includes manager Emily Oeser, captain Kal-El Key, Brayan Hurtado, My Dang, Nathaniel French and Shane Girard.
 
In Overwatch teams compete playing a best of five series, with each match taking place in a different in-game location and game mode consisting of two rounds. Each team's strategy will change depending on your location, game mode, team makeup along with multiple other factors.

   
 
The 2021 Spring SUNY Overwatch championship completed what was an extremely successful spring season for all of SUNY Canton's Esports teams. The Roos competed in the SUNY league, the Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) league along with League of Legends Spring league.
 
SUNY Canton had teams competing in Overwatch, League of Legends, Rainbow Six Siege, Rocket League, Valorant, Call of Duty: MW Gunfight and Super Smash Bros. Ultimate this semester. Overall, the Roos combined for a 164-123 record across all titles this spring.
 
In addition to the Ovewatch team's championship, the League of Legends A team also made it to the Spring League championship dropping a 3-1 decision to the College of Saint Rose in the title match. The SUNY Valorant team also made the Final Four before falling 2-1 to Stony Brook University.
   
 
"All of our teams had extremely successful seasons this spring culminating in our SUNY Overwatch championship," Esports Coordinator Charles Murray said. "I am extremely proud of the dedication of our players and the sustained growth and success of our program. We look forward to continuing the proud tradition of SUNY Canton Esports in future semesters."

Raising Funds for Charity
SUNY Canton also joined together with Alfred State Esports on Saturday, April 24th to host a charity stream to raise money for Doctors Without Borders. The stream was extremely successful as the teams twice broke their donation goal and raised a total of $2,610 for Doctors Without Borders.
