Read below for a recap on the SUNY Canton Overwatch team's 3-0 win v. Alfred State in the SUNY Esports Championship match on May 10, 2021.

Map 1: Lijiang Tower
Location: Night Market, Round 1
Game Mode:  King of the Hill

It is common for both teams to mirror team composition on Lijiang as there is a single effective strategy for winning the first fight.

Breakdown from Esports Coordinator Charles Murray:
Hurtado, a new rising star on the varsity Overwatch team at SUNY Canton, made a defining call early in the strategy and planning session of the match. He had seen that Alfred State had repeatedly run a very specific team composition for the initial engagement in their past matches and suggested a unique counter play scenario to his team. Key, the captain for SUNY Canton Overwatch, agreed with Hurtado’s call and green-lit the counter play option. Hurtado’s call, combined with turrets from DPS player French, was a defining factor for victory in the first engagement that ultimately led to the first win in the series for the Roos.

Map 1: Lijiang Tower
Location: Control Center, Round 2
Game Mode:  King of the Hill

Breakdown from Esports Coordinator Charles Murray:
After their first-round victory over the Pioneers, the SUNY Canton team was feeling confident in their individual skill performance and execution of team strategy. Canton won the second round fueled by the momentum from their dominant Round 1 victory. A few key plays again from Hurtado, this time on Junkrat, getting eliminations that secured team fights early, putting pressure on Alfred State to commit to point.

Great calls by Key and team to call for pressure on the Pioneers and make them commit resources before the real fight even began. Map 1 ends quickly heavily in favor of the Roos.

Map 2: Dorado
Location: Dorado
Game Mode: Escort

The game mode escort consists of a test of strength. Each team takes turns at escorting and objective that only moves forward when the attacking team is nearby. The team that escorts the objective the farthest wins. This game mode is incredibly dynamic and takes place at one location.

Breakdown from Esports Coordinator Charles Murray:
Round 1: Alfred State executes clean pharmercy strategy against SUNY Canton. We know that Coolalien, their dedicated Pharah player, needs to be dealt with otherwise we will have to switch our team composition and lose momentum.

Ghostie, a SUNY Canton DPS player, makes quick work of his opponents this match and knocks out key enemy abilities while securing the objective with his team. Hurtado makes a key play that stalls the entire enemy team giving SUNY Canton critical recovery time, allowing for a decisive first round, stopping the opponent cart at 92m.

My Dang, a SUNY Canton Overwatch support player, made a critical play resurrecting his teammate to hold the Pioneers and end the first round at 92m.

Round 2: Canton was able to make quick work of the Alfred State defenders and secured a Map 2 victory on the attack.

Map 3: Anubis
Location: Anubis
Game Mode: Assault (2CP)

Assault, commonly referred to as 2CP for the two capture points, is a game mode based around momentum. The attacking team must take two capture points from the defenders. The defenders must keep the attackers off the capture point.

Breakdown from Esports Coordinator Charles Murray:
Round 1: Alfred State attacks first and is denied momentum by an early counter-push from SUNY Canton, called for by Shane Girard, a tank player from Canton. The Pioneers attempted to rush back out and were met with a 6-man Earthshatter from SUNY Canton team captain Key, securing an easy team fight win for Canton. Alfred State made three more pushes but were ultimately fought back each time, resulting in getting full held at the first capture point.

Round 2: On attack Canton quickly pushed out matrix from SUNY Canton Overwatch team manager Emily Oeser, combined with another Earthshatter from Key. A clean follow-up from Hurtado secured the win and the series for SUNY Canton.
