Chavarri Strikes Out 14 in Opener, Mikula Drives in Three in Nightcap as Roos Drop Two to Poly

Canton, NY – Kayla Chavarri had an impressive outing in the opener striking out 14 batters and Alexandria Mikula drove in three runs in the nightcap but the SUNY Canton softball team dropped a North Atlantic Conference (NAC) doubleheader to SUNY Poly on Saturday afternoon.

HOW IT HAPPENED

GAME 1 – BOX SCORE
  • Neither team got on the board as it was a pitcher's duel early on. Kayla Chavarri struck out five SUNY Poly batters, all swinging over the first two innings. SUNY Canton also struck out going down swinging three times themselves over the opening two frames.
  • The Wildcats got on the board first in the top of the fourth when Chalee Wratten hit a solo shot to left center. The visitors added three more runs in the fifth on an RBI single and a 2 RBI double.
  • The Roos rallied with two outs in the bottom of the seventh. Hailey Bentley singled down the left field line and Angelina LoPiccolo followed with a single to right center as Bentley moved first to third. After a LoPiccolo steal, Madison Austin struck out swinging but advanced to first as the ball got by the catcher. Bentley also scored on the play.
  • Sophia Harris placed an RBI single into center field to score LoPiccolo which brought the winning run to the plate in Mackenzie Currie. The Wildcats were able to get out of a jam recording a fielder's choice to end the game.  
  • Kayla Chavarri took the loss in the opener surrendering four earned runs but had a remarkable 14 strike outs. The 14 strike outs are the most for any Roo pitcher in at least the last 10 seasons, as far back as statistical archives are available.
  • Caitlin Reilly picked up the win for the Wildcats allowing two earned runs with six strike outs.
  • Jordan Knapp and LoPiccolo had two hits each for the Roos. Aeron Hamm paced Poly with two hits, while Ariel Smith drove in a pair of runs.
 
GAME 2 – BOX SCORE  
  • The two teams wasted no time getting the bats going in the nightcap as SUNY Poly produced eight runs in the opening inning. The Roos responded with five runs of their own in the bottom half of the inning.
  • Currie singled up the middle to score Austin and a LoPiccolo infield single loaded the bases for Shaylyn DeVito. DeVito produced a 2 RBI double to left center to bring Currie and Knapp across the plate. Alexandria Mikula rounded out the scoring with a 2 RBI single through the right side scoring LoPiccolo and DeVito.
  • The Wildcats kept the bats going scoring three runs each in the second and fifth innings and added one run in the third.
  • SUNY Canton rounded out their scoring when Mikula legged out an infield single to bring home Chavarri.
  • Mikula led Canton going 2-for-3 with 3 RBI, while DeVito was 2-for-3 driving in a pair of runs. Currie and Knapp finished with two hits apiece, while Currie drove in a run.
  • Six different players had multi-hit outings for the Wildcats.
  • Austin took the loss for the Roos allowing eight earned runs with two strike outs, while Jordan Penoyer picked up the win for the visitors allowing six earned runs with two strike outs.

These two teams will have a rematch on Sunday with a doubleheader beginning at 1 p.m. in Canton.
