Currie, Chavarri and Knapp Post Four or More Hits as Softball Drops Two to Delhi

Canton, NY – Mackenzie Currie, Kayla Chavarri and Jordan Knapp all had four or more hits on the day but the SUNY Canton softball team dropped a doubleheader to visiting SUNY Delhi by scores of 7-3 and 12-4 on Sunday afternoon.

The games were the first home contests for the Roos since April 25th, 2019.

HOW IT HAPPENED

GAME 1 – BOX SCORE  
  • Delhi opened a 4-0 lead after three innings plating one run each in the first and second and another two runs in the third.
  • The Roos got on the board in the top of the fourth when Angelina LoPiccolo scored Kayla Chavarri on a ground out to short.
  • The Broncos responded with three more runs in the bottom of the fourth.
  • Canton added one run each in the fifth and sixth innings. Mackenzie Currie hit a solo shot to left field in the fifth and Madison Austin brought Chavarri across on an RBI ground out in the sixth.
  • Jordan Knapp went 3-for-4, while Currie was 2-for-4 with the Roos first home run of the season. Chavarri was 2-for-3 scoring twice, while Sophia Harris, Shaylyn DeVito and LoPocciolo also had one hit each.
  • Chavarri took the loss for the Roos allowing four earned runs with six strike outs and two walks in 6.0 innings.
  • Mel Papuli picked up the victory for the Broncos allowing two earned runs with two strike outs in the complete game effort.
  • Mackenzie Sparacino, Shelby Nolan and Papuli led Delhi with two hits each, while Katelynn Rose drove in a pair of runs.
 
GAME 2 – BOX SCORE
  • The Broncos scored once in the bottom of the first but the Roos responded with one run each in the top half of the second and third innings.
  • Chavarri and Beane led off the second inning with back-to-back singles and Chavarri scored on a DeVito sacrifice fly.
  • In the third Currie led off with a double to center field and Knapp followed with a base hit to third. Knapp stole second and Currie got home on a throwing error by the catcher.
  • The Broncos combined for 10 runs with three in the second and seven more in the third inning.
  • Canton added a pair of runs in the fourth inning on a Currie 2 RBI single to right center scoring Austin and Harris.
  • Delhi scored one final run in the bottom of the fifth for the 12-4 run-rule victory.
  • Currie and Bentley were both a perfect 3-for-3 in the nightcap as Currie drove in two runs. Chavarri and Beane both finished 2-for-3, while Knapp and Austin had one hit each.
  • Beane took the loss allowing 10 earned runs with four strike out sand three walks. Katelynn Rose picked up the complete game win surrendering four earned runs with a strike out.
  • Dakota Baker paced the Broncos with three hits, two runs and 2 RBI. Sparacino, Nolan, Jessica Kwasnik, Carissa Crandall and Rose all had multi-hit outings in the nightcap.

The Roos are scheduled to return to the diamond for a NAC doubleheader v. SUNY Poly on Saturday.
