Canton, NY – Jordan Knapp went a perfect 5-for-5 at the plate and
Kayla Chavarri provided a strong outing on the mound as the SUNY Canton softball team earned an 11-3 win v. St. Lawrence University in their season opener on Wednesday evening.
The win is just the third ever for the Roos vs. the Saints and the first since Canton defeated St. Lawrence 8-5 on April 2, 2016.

HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Roos bats jumped all over the St. Lawrence pitching early scoring 10 runs over the first three innings.
- Alaina Beane got the scoring started in the top of the first when she singled home Mackenzie Currie. Canton tacked on four more runs in the second inning. Angelina LoPiccolo brought home Madison Austin on a single to center and Knapp followed with another base hit to center to bring in Sophia Harris. Shaylyn DeVito showed patience at the plate drawing a free pass to score Currie.
- The Roos continue to apply the offensive pressure with five more runs in the third inning. LoPiccolo laced a 2 RBI double to center plating Harris and Austin. Knapp made it back-to-back two-baggers scoring LoPiccolo. DeVito picked up her second RBI of the game when she singled home Currie and Knapp later scored on a throwing error after DeVito stole second.
- After three innings of scoreless pitching from Chavarri, the Saints got on the board with one run in the fourth and two in the fifth. Canton added another run on a Knapp RBI single in the top of the sixth before play was halted due to darkness.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
- Knapp started her season perfect at the plate going 5-for-5 with a double, a run scored and drove in three runs. LoPiccolo posted a pair of hits and runs to go with 3 RBI.
- Harris, Currie and Austin all finished with multi-hit outings, while Currie also drew a pair of walks. DeVito had one hit, a walk and drove in two runs, while Chavarri and Alaina Beane finished with a hit and RBI each.
- Chavarri tossed four innings finishing with six strike outs, two walks and surrendered just one earned run.
- Gabby Slater took the loss for the Saints giving up four earned runs on eight hits in 1.1 innings.
WHAT'S NEXT
The softball team returns to action next Wednesday when it visits Clarkson for a doubleheader at 3 p.m.
