Santana and Fitch Post Double-Doubles as Four Roos Reach Double Figures in NAC Win v. Wildcats

Fitch Moves into Top 25 All-Time in NCAA D-III Blocks

Canton, NY – Seniors Danny Santana and Andrew Fitch both recorded double-doubles as the SUNY Canton men's basketball team earned an 83-72 North Atlantic Conference (NAC) win v. Cazenovia on Saturday afternoon.

THE BASICS

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Roos jumped out to a quick 7-0 lead early on behind five points from Fitch. The Canton lead ballooned to eight after Santana found Peyton Olsen for a three-pointer with just under eight minutes left in the opening half.
  • The hosts opened a nine point lead with 3:19 left in the first stanza after a Santana Fastbreak layup but Cazenovia used a 9-2 run to trim the deficit to two. Canton led 42-38 at intermission.
  • Just over five minutes into the second half the Wildcats took a three-point lead after a Cam Majors trifecta.
  • Cazenovia led by as many as six (58-52) with 11:10 remaining. Canton responded with a 12-2 run that included 10 points from Santana to open up a 64-60 lead with 7:09 remaining.
  • The Roos would not trail again in the contest opening up a double-digit lead in the final minutes.
 
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
  • Santana led all players with 25 points and four assists, while adding 11 rebounds for his first double-double of the season. Fitch totaled 14 points, 13 rebounds and seven blocks coming up just short of a triple-double.
  • Juztin Chambers-Phillips struck for 16 points, while Olsen also reached double figures with 11 points. DeMerrill Levy chipped in nine points and Fadil Atcha-Dedji added seven points and seven rebounds off the bench.
  • Canton shot 43.8 % from the field and 37.0 % from three-point range, while Cazenovia hit on 35.7 % and 46.4%, respectively.
  • The Roos held the upper hand in rebounding (48-35) turning 16 offensive rebounds into 26 second chance points. The hosts also held a 32-18 advantage in points in the paint.
  • Kobe Bogart paced the Wildcats with 22 points, while Amoni Clarke and Aiden Zehr added 13 and 12 points, respectively.

FITCH THE FORTRESS
  • With his 15 blocks this weekend Fitch has moved into the top 25 in a pair of career statistical categories for NCAA Division III. He currently ranks 17th all-time in blocks per game in D-III history with 3.48 per game (292 in 84 games). His 292 career blocks also rank him tied for 23rd all-time (and counting).

The men's basketball team returns to the hardwood on Tuesday when they host Route 11 rival SUNY Potsdam at 6 p.m.
