Santana Nets Season-High 29 but Men’s Basketball Falls in Final Seconds at Maritime

Throggs Neck, NY – Danny Santana netted a season-high 29 points but host Maritime College earned a 69-65 win v. the SUNY Canton men's basketball team in the final seconds of a non-conference game on Wednesday afternoon.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The hosts opened up an early nine point lead 12 minutes into the contest. The Roos chipped away at the lead using a 12-5 run over a four-and-a-half-minute span to tie the game at 31 with 26 seconds left until intermission.
  • The Privateers hit a three as time expired in the opening half to take a 34-31 lead into intermission.
  • Santana led all players with 13 points in the opening 20 minutes shooting 5-for-6 from the field. Quran DuBois also chipped in six points. Ryan Donovan led the Privateers with 10 points.
  • The Roos led by as many as seven (58-51) with 7:09 left in the game as SUNY Canton clung to the lead down the stretch.
  • Canton led by three after Santana hit a pull up jumper with 1:15 remaining. Maritime knocked down a pair of free throws to get within one with 48 seconds to play.
  • The Roos split a pair from the line with 17 seconds remaining to lead by two but an old-fashioned three-point play gave the Privateers a one-point lead with six seconds remaining in the game.
  • Canton turned the ball over on its next two possessions and the hosts hit three of four free throws in the final seconds to seal the win.
 
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
  • Santana led all players with 29 points and nine rebounds shooting 11-for-14 from the field and 3-for-5 from three. DuBois added 15 points in his season debut including hitting nine of his 11 free throw attempts.
  • Andrew Fitch chipped in nine points, seven rebounds and seven blocks on 4-for-7 shooting, while DeMerrill Levy added seven points and seven boards.
  • Santana's 29 points were just two off his career high when he posted 31 points at Paul Smith's (1/26/2018) during his rookie season.
  • With his seven blocks Fitch currently ranks 15th all-time in NCAA Division III with 311 career blocks.
  • Donovan led the hosts with 20 points and eight rebounds, while Mike Regan (13) and Jaylin Gray (11) also reached double figures.
  • Canton held a 48-37 edge in rebounding, while Maritime (25-for-35) made 20 more trips to the charity stripe than the Roos (13-for-15).
  • The Privateers scored 21 points off 22 Canton turnovers, while Maritime only turned the ball over seven times.
