Chambers-Phillips & Santana Reach Double Figures v. Middlebury

Middlebury, VT – Juztin Chambers-Phillips and Danny Santana led the men's basketball team in double figures but SUNY Canton dropped a 79-60 non-conference game at Middlebury College on Tuesday.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Roos led briefly early on as Justin Omaga put back a dunk on the offensive glass for a 5-2 lead. SUNY Canton once again held a three point edge at 11-8 after back-to-back threes from Brandon Averitt.
  • Middlebury used a 16-3 run over a span of eight minutes to take their first double digit lead at 24-14 with just over six minutes left in the opening half.
  • Canton cut the lead to four (30-26) following a DeMerrill Levy trifecta, but the Panthers the final 1:27 of the half on a 7-0 run to take a 37-26 lead into intermission.
  • Averitt led the Roos with nine first-half points shooting 3-for-4 from three-point range off the bench. Levy and Chambers-Phillips added six points each.
  • The hosts ballooned the lead to 18 just over three minutes into the second half and held a 17-point lead midway through the stanza.
  • Canton trimmed the deficit to 11 following a Santana three with 4:51 remaining, but that was as close as the Roos would get.
 
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
  • Chambers-Phillips and Santana led the Roos with 11 points apiece as they combined for 13 rebounds. Andrew Fitch finished with nine points, six rebounds and a game-best three blocks.
  • Averitt added nine points of the bench, all of which came in the first half, and Levy finished with eight points and a team-best four assists.
  • SUNY Canton shot 32.9% from the field and 29.7% from three for the game, while Middlebury finished with marks of 49.3% and 33.3%. The Panthers held the upper hand in rebounds (46-37) and points in the paint (52-22).
  • Both teams played a clean game combining for just 17 turnovers and 16 fouls with six free throw attempts each.
  • Alex Sobel (19 points, 10 rebounds) and David Brennan (12 points, 11 rebounds) recorded double-doubles for the Panthers, while Noah Osher (16 points, 9 rebounds) and Jaden Bobbett (9 points, 8 assists) just missed out on the feat.
 
WHAT'S NEXT?
The men's basketball team is scheduled to host SUNY Poly in its North Atlantic Conference (NAC) and home opener on Friday at 5:30 p.m.
