Schlyter Has Strong Outing as Anna Maria Blanks Men’s Hockey, 1-0

Auburn, MA – Filip Schlyter made 27 saves in his collegiate debut but Anna Maria scored a second period goal to earn a 1-0 win in what proved to be a defensive battle on Saturday.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • SUNY Canto held a slim 13-12 edge in shots in the opening period as both goaltenders were strong between the pipes as the teams skated to first intermission with a scoreless tie.
  • The Roos once again held the upper hand in shots, 8-6, in the second period but it was Deklan Whillans goal at 7:18 of the middle period that proved to be the difference. Matthew Gilbert and Aryan Batra picked up helpers on the play.
  • The Amcats held a 10-7 shots advantage in the third period.
  • SUNY Canton pulled Schlyter with 1 minute and 49 seconds remaining in the game for the extra attacker. The Roos were unable to get a shot on goal in the final minutes as the hosts held on for the 1-0 victory.
 
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
  • Schlyter recorded a .964 save percentage in his first career start. He made double digit saves in both the first (12) and third (10) periods.
  • Julius Huset finished with a 28 save shutout for the Amcats.
  • Both teams struggled on the power play as Canton was 0-for-3 and Anna Maria was 0-for-6.
 
WHAT'S NEXT?
The men's hockey team has two weeks off before they host the SUNY Canton Tournament the weekend after Thanksgiving. The Roos will square off with Saint Anselm on Saturday, November 27th at 7:30 p.m. Hamilton and SUNY Potsdam will square off in the first contest at 4 p.m.
