Four Unanswered Goals Lifts Men’s Hockey to 4-4 Tie v. Stevenson in Season Opener

Canton, NY – After falling behind by two the SUNY Canton men's hockey team rallied to score four unanswered goals to earn a 4-4 overtime tie vs. visiting Stevenson University in front of a tremendous crowd on Friday evening in the season opener for both teams.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The visiting Mustangs got on the board first as Malcom Palmer put home a goal off passes from Anthony Starzi and Nick Dineen at 4:48 of the first. Stevenson doubled their lead as Roo goaltender Pierce Diamond slipped as he tried to corral the puck behind his own net. Seth Bergeron tallied his first goal of the season on the play.
  • Stevenson owned a 10-5 shots advantage in the opening period, but from there the Canton offense came alive outshooting Stevenson 32-18 the remainder of the game.
  • The Roos scored their first goal of the season at 7:51 of the middle period with the skater advantage. Brady Morrison fed the puck from the point to Carson Lanceleve on his left. Lanceleve slid a quick pass cross ice to Sam Martin at the right circle. He showed patience leaving a pass for Morrison at the point as he wristed a shot through traffic out in front off the left post and in.
  • SUNY Canton drew even at 13:23 of the second. Sebastien Paquette gloved down a Stevenson clear attempt at mid ice skating in past two Mustang defenders towards the right circle. He found Jake Mayette at the far post as he buried his first goal of the season. Stevenson was whistled for a penalty on the goal resulting in a skater advantage for Canton.
  • The Roos took their first lead of the game just 22 seconds later when Jesse Farabee made the water bottle pop as he roofed a shot from above the right circle. Brett Bannister and Matthew Headland picked up helpers on the play. Canton skated to second intermission leading 3-2.
  • The hosts doubled up Stevenson just 1:31 into the third period on their second consecutive power play goal. Brendan McCormack won the faceoff back to Lanceleve at the point. He left the puck for Morrison as he circled around him at the point. Morrison found Lanceleve on a give-and-go at the left circle. He initially slipped fanning on his initial shot but wristed a shot from his knees top shelf for the 4-2 advantage.
  • Brendan Rylott got Stevenson within one at 15:01 of the third off the setup from Evan Beers and Alex Rivet.
  • With 3:30 remaining and a one-goal lead Canton was whistled for a costly hooking penalty. The Mustangs made the Roos pay just 25 seconds later when Rivet tied the game.
  • SUNY Canton outshot Stevenson 5-3 in overtime and Diamond made two terrific glove saves as the teams would settle for a tie.
 
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
  • Morrison and Lanceleve led the Roos with a goal and assist each. Farabee and Mayette also posted their first goals of the season.
  • Rylott and Rivet paced Stevenson with a goal and assist each.
  • The Roos went 3-for-6 on the power play, while Stevenson was 1-for-5.
  • SUNY Canton outshot the visitors 37-28. The Roos controlled the circle winning 46 faceoffs compared to 27 for the Mustangs.
  • Diamond made 24 saves for Canton, while Ryan Kenny stopped 33 shots for Stevenson.

These two teams will have a rematch on Saturday at 4 p.m. in the Roos House.
