Balanced Offense Leads Women’s Lacrosse Past Fitchburg State, 15-3

Englewood, FL – Nine different players found the back of the net paced by three goals and two assists from Molly Denny as the SUNY Canton women's lacrosse team earned a convincing 15-3 win v. Fitchburg State in sunny Florida on Tuesday morning.

The Roos, who have started the season a perfect 3-0, avenged a 13-12 double overtime loss to the Falcons from last season's spring break trip.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Denny led all players with five points, while Devin Kelly totaled two goals, two assists and game-highs of five ground balls and five caused turnovers. Stephanie Thayer recorded her first collegiate hat trick, while Emily Vogt also scored twice.
  • Cecelia Neally and MaryClare Bowes tallied a goal and assist apiece, while Allison Wakefield, Erin Parks and Lindsey Ingram also found the back of the net. Mia Jermano tied Kelly's game-high of five caused turnovers.
  • The Roos scored the first five goals of the game with two coming off the stick of Thayer. Rebecca Fisher broke the Falcons scoreless drought with 6:37 left in the opening half as Canton led 7-1 at intermission.
  • SUNY Canton scored six more goals out of halftime extending their unanswered goal streak to eight as they led 13-1 with just under 19 minutes remaining in the game as they cruised to victory.
  • Madison Leary made five saves while allowing just two scores over the first 43 plus minutes, while Nicole Piskorowski made one stop in relief. Marguerite Belcher made eight saves and allowed 13 scores in just under 43 minutes in the loss.
  • Canton held the upper hand in shots on goal (26-9), turnovers (11-22) and ground balls (27-21). The Roos went 20-for-22 on clears compared to just a 12-for-19 mark for the Falcons. Fitchburg State held the draw control edge, 12-8.

The women's lacrosse team will square off with Carroll University in the Spring Fling Tournament in Florida at 1 p.m. on Thursday.
