Canton, NY – The SUNY Canton women's basketball and women's hockey teams will be hosting a pair of upcoming home contests in February to help raise awareness and support for cancer and heart disease.
The women's basketball team will take part in a Play 4 Kay game against NVU-Lyndon on Friday, February 8th at 7:30 p.m. Sandra Kay Yow was a Hall of Fame coach for the North Carolina State Wolfpack women's basketball team and passed away following a battle with cancer in 2009.
The women's basketball team will wear Play 4 Kay shirts in warm-ups and members of the SUNY Canton softball team will be collecting donations to support the fund during the men's game on the 8th at 5:30 p.m. and the women's game at 7:30 p.m.
The women's hockey team will be hosting a game in support of heart disease research during its contest v. Becker College on February 15th. The Roos will be wearing special heart jerseys during the game and encourage fans to wear red to the contest.
Assistant Coach
John Mousaw and Natalie Miner, the little sister of Roos student-athlete
Brittany Miner will take part in a ceremonial puck drop prior to the contest. Mousaw was diagnosed with Long QT Syndrome (LQTS) at 14 years old after his heart stopped and had to stop playing hockey until his senior year of high school at which point he had a defibrillator/pacemaker device implanted. Miner had to undergo unexpected open heart surgery due to a ruptured mitral valve in April 2017. She will have a second open heart surgery within the next few years to replace the mitral valve.
Donations will be accepted and there will also be a chuck-a-puck contest during the game with all proceeds going to the American Heart Association.
The SUNY Canton athletics department will also be celebrating National Girls and Women in Sports Day on February 15th. The female athletic teams have invited local youth teams to attend the women's hockey game and there will be a ceremony recognizing the female teams at intermission.
