Canton, NY – Several SUNY Canton sports programs have announced general interest and tryout information to start the 2026-27 academic year.
 
Please note that before trying out every student interested in trying out must contact the head coach of their respective sport to make sure there is mutual interest prior to completing clearance paperwork. Please note that SUNY Canton's teams are extremely competitive, and all coaches may not offer open tryouts.
 
Below is a list of all sports who are currently planning on hosting a general interest meeting or tryout. If a sport is not listed they aren't currently planning to host an open try out, but if you have specific questions please feel free to contact that coach directly by visiting our staff directory.
 
Fall
Esports
Fall 2026 esports tryouts will take place in September. More information will be available on the tryout dates and times once the SUNY and ECAC Esports schedules have been released. Once we have tryout dates and information it will be added to this story and shared in a campus-wide e-mail.
 
Men's and Women's Cross Country
Are you a runner and interested in possibly joining the cross country team? Just send an email to Coach John at kennedyjm@canton.edu or reach him by phone at 9315) 386-7513. We have space available on the team for a few more runners.  These spots may be filled by current students, as well as new incoming students.
 
Men's and Women's Golf
If you are interested in joining or trying out for the men's or women's golf team, please contact Head Coach Mark Bickelhaupt at bickelha@canton.edu.


Men's Soccer
If you have goalkeeping experience, please reach out right away to Head Coach Tim Penrod at penrodt@canton.edu. The men's soccer team will be running walk-on tryouts during the spring semester for those that are invited. Anyone interested in that opportunity should reach out to Penrod at penrodt@canton.edu at the conclusion of the fall season.
 
Women's Soccer
If you are interested in the women's soccer team, please contact Head Coach Matt Milograno at milogranom@canton.edu for more information. The team is particularly interested in anyone with goalkeeping experience.

Winter 

Cheerleading
The cheerleading team will have a general interest meeting on Tuesday (9/8) at 6 p.m. in the Roos House Mezzanine, between the hockey rink and field house.  

No winter NCAA teams currently have tryouts scheduled. If you are interested in a team, please reach out to the head coach of the respective sport.
 
Women's Basketball
The women's basketball team is looking for a team manager. If you are interested in this volunteer position please reach out to Head Coach Chris Klassen at klassenc@canton.edu.
 
Men's Basketball
There won't be any open tryouts for men's basketball. If you are interested in joining the team, please contact Head Coach Dylan Seikel at seikeld@canton.edu.
 
Spring
 
Men's Lacrosse
The men's lacrosse team will be hosting a general interest meeting on Monday (8/31) at 6 p.m. in the Roos House Mezzanine, located upstairs between the hockey rink and the field house. Those interested who can't make the meeting please contact Head Coach Cam Talcott at talcottc@canton.edu or 315-386-7549.
 
Women's Lacrosse
If you are interested in joining or trying out for the women's lacrosse team, please contact Head Coach Adam Todd at toddadam@canton.edu or (315) 386-7121. The women's lacrosse team will hold a general interest meeting on Friday (8/28) at 7 PM in the Coakley Classroom located upstairs above the fitness center in Roos House.
 
Softball
If you are interested in joining or trying out for the softball team, please contact Head Coach Kelsy Waite at waitek@canton.edu or (315) 386-7032. There will be a general interest meeting Tuesday (9/1) at 4 PM in the Coakley Classroom located upstairs above the fitness center in Roos House.
