DuBois Scores 22, Roos Control Overtime for Weekend Split v. Thomas

Canton, NY – Quran DuBois led the men's basketball team with a career-high 22 points as the Roos outscored Thomas 14-2 in overtime to earn a 78-66 win in North Atlantic Conference (NAC) play on Saturday afternoon.

THE BASICS
  • Result: SUNY Canton 78, Thomas 66 – OT
  • Location: Stan Cohen Court – Canton, NY
  • Records: SUNY Canton (5-5, 1-1 NAC) | Thomas (5-3, 1-1 NAC)

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Both teams struggled offensively early as they combined to start 2-for-22 shooting as the Roos led 3-2 six minutes in.
  • Canton led by as many as seven, while Thomas held as much as a six point advantage in a first half that featured 10 lead changes. Thomas took a 31-27 lead into intermission.
  • Jordan Goodson paced Thomas with 10 first half points, while Andrew Fitch had eight.
  • Ibu Smith converted an old-fashioned three-point play and added a pair of free throws to extend the Canton lead to 58-52 with 4:28 to go.
  • In a game of runs, each team exchanged 5-0 spurts as the Roos held a 62-57 advantage with 1:30 left in regulation after an emphatic fast break dunk from Fitch.
  • Goodson made back-to-back buckets for the Terriers to cut the deficit to one (62-61) with 43 seconds left. Kahdean Bennett responded with a fast break lay-in off a pass from Joseph Werner with 36 seconds to go.
  • Trailing by three with 23 seconds to play Thomas called timeout. Out of the break Goodson hit a game-tying three-pointer from NBA range at the top of the key with 14 seconds to go.
  • Canton had two chances to win it in regulation as a late layup wouldn't go and a desperation three from the wing was off the mark as the teams would need overtime to decide a winner.
  • It was all Roos in the extra session as a made jumper from Goodson with 3:10 left in OT was their lone basket. DuBois and Bennett had four points apiece in the extra session, while Danny Santana, Fitch and Werner also scored for the Roos.
  • DuBois finished with 22 points, six rebounds and three steals, while Santana added 12 points and five boards.
  • Bennett recorded 10 points and doubled his previous career-high posting 10 rebounds for his first collegiate double-double. Fitch came up one point short of a double-double with nine points, 13 rebounds, four assists and three blocks.
  • Werner stuffed the stat sheet with six points, nine rebounds, five assists and three blocks, while Ibu Smith chipped in seven points off the bench.
  • The Roos dominated the paint outscoring the Terriers, 40-16. Canton also outrebounded Thomas 53-42 and turned 15 offensive boards into 14 second chance points, while getting 19 points from its bench. The Roos knocked down 15 of their 16 free throw attempts (94 percent) in the contest.
  • Goodson led all players with 26 points to go with 10 rebounds for Thomas. Lovegeurson Fleurine (12) and Evan Arsenault (11) also scored in double figures.

WHAT'S NEXT
The Roos return to the hardwood next Saturday (12/14) when they square off with Farmingdale State at 5 p.m. at Old Westbury.
