Men’s Hockey Opens 2019-20 with Win at Wilkes Behind Three Points from Matthews

Wilkes-Barre, PA – Sophomore Kyler Matthews tied a game-high with three points including scoring the game-winning goal as the SUNY Canton men's hockey team opened its 2019-20 season with a 5-3 road win at Wilkes University on Friday evening.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Matthews led the team with four points. Jake Mayette added a goal and two assists, while Max Routledge finished with a goal and assist. Stuart Fierheller and Jesse Farabee also found the back of the net.
  • Fierheller got the scoring started in shorthanded variety 6 minutes, 53 seconds into the contest off a pass from Routledge. The goal was the third career tally for the senior defenseman.  
  • Routledge was on the scoring end seven minutes later with assists credited to Mayette and Matthews.
  • Michael Cerasuolo who had an impressive start to the season, stopped all 13 shots he faced in the opening period as the Roos led 2-0 at first intermission.
  • Canton continued its momentum as just 15 ticks into the middle period Farabee, a junior transfer, lit the lamp for the first time in a Roos uniform. Tyson Bruce and Matthews picked up helpers on the play.
  • Wilkes got on the board at the 4:25 mark of the period as Tyson Araujo scored on the penalty kill. Araujo would add another special teams' goal, this one coming with the skater advantage, with 1 minute, 6 seconds left in the second. The Roos took the one-goal edge into second intermission.
  • Matthews added a crucial power play insurance goal from Mayette, which proved to be the eventual game-winner, five minutes into the third period to open the lead to 4-2.
  • Araujo completed the hat trick for the Colonels scoring his second power play goal of the contest at 12:31 of the third.
  • Wilkes pulled the goalie for the extra attacker with 1:39 remaining and 12 seconds later Mayette put home an empty-netter to seal the win. Sean David and Matthew Headland assisted the goal.
  • Cerasuolo finished the game with 46 saves on 49 shots, coming up just one stop short of his career-high (47) in a 6-4 win at No. 3 nationally-ranked Adrian last season.
  • Brandon Gordon made 24 saves in the loss for Wilkes.
