Canton, NY – Four different players found the back of the net at least three times in the opening half as the SUNY Canton men's lacrosse team built a double-digit halftime lead on its way to a 17-10 victory v. visiting Houghton College on Saturday.
 
The Roos (3-1), winners of three straight, jumped out to a 3-1 lead after the first quarter behind two goals off the stick of Andrew Garrett. Canton blew the game open in the second quarter outscoring the Highlanders 12-0. Houghton (0-2) scored the first goal of the game before Canton netted 15 straight goals.
 
Garrett led the Roos with four goals and one assist, while Trenton Yule had three goals and two assists in the opening half. Jake Sutton and Josh Yelvington also tallied three first half goals each.
 
Canton cleared its bench in the second half allowing multiple reserves extended playing time as Houghton was able to strike for nine second half scores leading to the 17-10 final.
   
Canton native Rico Dobbs led all players with eight ground balls and 12 face-off wins as he went 12-for-16 in the X. Andrew Garret led the Roos with five goals and one assist to go with five ground balls, while Jake Sutton tallied four goals, one assist and five ground balls.
 
Kyle Smith finished with a game-best four assists to go with a goal and five ground balls. With his goal and four assists Smith eclipsed the 100 point career scoring mark. Yule totaled three goals and two assists, while Yelvington found the back of the net three times. Tucker Ainslie and Brandon Schmidt were solid defensively causing four and three turnovers, respectively.
 
Kody Kocsis earned his third straight victory in net stopping two of the three shots he faced in the first half. Justin LaDuke made two saves in the third quarter, while Brennan Bueno stopped five shots over the final 15 minutes. Bryce Bellan turned aside six shots for the Highlanders.
   
The Roos held an 18-3 shots on goal advantage and 33-17 edge in ground balls in the first half, while going 10-for-11 in clears and 11-for-18 in face-offs. Canton was also 2-for-3 in man-up opportunities in the second quarter.
