Six Players Score as Men’s Hockey Opens Season with 6-4 Win v. Wilkes

CHS BOX SCORE

Canton, NY –
Six different players found the back of the net as the SUNY Canton men's hockey team scored two goals in each period to earn a 6-4 win v. visiting Wilkes University in the season opener for both teams on Friday evening on Alumni Night in the Roos House.

Jake Mayette, Kyler Matthews and Christopher Mammas all posted a goal and assist each, while Joe Deveny and David Hopfer dished out a pair of assists each. Jeffrey Gauld, Luke Hincenbergs and Zach Ahola also scored for the Roos.

Wilkes took a 2-0 lead halfway through the opening period behind goals from Donald Flynn and Tyson Araujo. The Roos got on the board at 14:08 of the first when Mammas tallied his first collegiate goal off passes from Hopfer and Connor Tuttle on the power play.

The Colonels were whistled for a five-minute major and game misconduct late in the first period giving the Roos an extended five-minute skater advantage. Gauld tied the game at two with 30 seconds left in the first on a sensational score where with his back facing the net he went between the legs top shelf.

Mayette added Canton's third consecutive power play goal, this one still on the five minute major penalty from the Colonels. The sophomore assistant captain gave the Roos their first lead of the contest, an advantage they would never relinquish when he scored off passes from Hopfer and Pease.

Ahola slotted the first goal of his career off passes from Mayette and William Ma with 1:31 left in the second to extend the lead to 4-2. Wilkes got within one just before second intermission on a Chris Dalfarra tally.

The Roos responded with back-to-back goals off the sticks of assistant captain Hincenbergs along with Matthews. Deveny assisted both of the crucuial goals to help Canton pull away before the Colonels netted a power play goal with three seconds remaining.

Michael Cerasuolo made 27 saves in the win for the Roos, while Brandon Gordon stopped 18 shots for Wilkes.
