Patchogue, NY – The SUNY Canton men's lacrosse team used a late second half comeback attempt but fell on the road to St. Joseph's College of Long Island 17-11 on Sunday afternoon.
St. Joseph's (3-1) jumped out to a 3-0 lead 4:06 into game off a pair of goals from Casey Hickey.
Trenton Yule got the Roos (0-3) on the board off the setup from
Luke DeGaetano 30 seconds later and
Josh Yelvington added his team-leading fifth of the season off a pass from
Jake Sutton to get the Roos within two.
The Golden Eagles rattled off seven straight scores to open an 11-2 advantage before Canton netted two of the final three scores of halftime. The first came when
Kyle Smith found Yule and the latter came off the stick of Yelvington. The hosts took a 12-4 lead into intermission.
The hosts scored the first two goals out of half to lead 14-4 but Canton responded with seven of the next eight and five straight goals to get within 15-11. DeGaetano and
Cam Carter scored a pair of goals each during the run. The Eagles stalled the comeback bid scoring the final two goals for the 17-11 final.
Yule led the Roos with three goals and an assist, while Yelvington recorded his second hat trick in a Roo uniform. Hickey tallied six goals and two assists, while Scott Reece added four goals and a helper for the hosts.
Kody Kocsis turned aside 19 shots between the pipes for Canton, while Andrew Yoli made four saves for the Eagles.
