Four Roos Tally Multi-Point Nights in Last Second Loss to Fredonia

CHS BOX SCORE

Canton, NY – Oskar Gerhardso scored with 1.5 seconds remaining to lift visiting Fredonia to a 5-4 win on Friday evening in the Roos House.

After trailing 4-1 early in the second period SUNY Canton (7-13-2) scored three unanswered goals but the late game-winner lifted the Blue Devils to 10-8-2 on the season.

The Roos penalty kill went 2-for-2 early in the contest but it was the Blue Devils who got on the board first at 7:56 of the opening period when Jacob Haynes played the puck from behind the net to Kyle Jelinski at the bottom of the right circle. His initial shot was saved by Josh Erickson but the rebound went right to Tommy DeFelice out in front who lifted the rebound over the blocker of the goaltender.

The Blue Devils doubled their lead at 16:04 of the first when Marcus Ortiz went bar-down from the left circle. Ben Casale started the breakout from the near-boards finding Gavin Nickerson on who set up Ortiz.

Canton got one back with just one tick left in the first period on the power play. J.P. Langlois dumped the puck toward the right board as Joe Deveny picked it up at the right circle. His initial shot was saved by Anton Rosen but the puck rebounded to Kyle Matsumoto as he put home his fifth of the season into the open net. Fredonia took a 2-1 lead into the locker room but the Roos gained some late momentum in the period.

Bobby Polacheck gave the Blue Devils a 3-1 lead just 89 seconds into the middle period when he skated the puck across the blue line and went bar-down. Ortiz and Sean Leonard earned helpers on the play. Fredonia added another score 22 seconds later when DeFelice left a drop-off pass for Jelinski behind the net. The puck deflected out in front where Haynes batted it home past the glove of Erickson.

The Roos got one back at 8:39 on the power play. Joey Vocino cycled the puck to Tyler Bullard at the point who hit Vili-Jesper Koivula with a pass as he put a one-timer past Rosen from the right circle.

The Devils were whistled for back-to-back penalties as the Roos skated 5-on-3 for 1:30 with 7:38 remaining in the middle period. Thirty seconds into the two-skater advantage Canton got within one as Bullard put home his own rebound at the far post. Koivula started the play with a pass from the right circle to Langlois at the point. Fredonia held a slim 21-20 shots advantage after two as the Roos were 3-for-5 on the power play and 4-for-4 on the penalty kill through 40 minutes.

Canton tied the game just less than two minutes into the third when Trenton Yule found Vocino at the near post. He made an extremely unselfish play finding Deveny with a quick pass across the crease as he one-timed a shot into the open net for his sixth goal of the season.

Ortiz guided the puck into offensive zone with time winding down and left a drop-off pass for Gerhardso who went top shelf with 1.5 seconds left to earn the last second win for Fredonia.

Josh Erickson made 14 saves over the first 21:51, while Austin WAshkurak turned aside 13 shots over the final 38:09. Rosen made 22 saves for Fredonia.
