Strong Start Leads Fredonia Past Men’s Hockey

CHS BOX SCORE

Canton, NY – Joe Deveny scored his seventh goal of the season but the SUNY Canton men's hockey team was unable to overcome an early deficit in a 5-2 loss to Fredonia on Saturday in the Roos House.

Fredonia (11-8-2) got on the board first just 52 seconds in when Hunter Long's initial shot was blocked by Kyle Dora and Bobby Polachek's shot bounced off a Roo defender and into the net for the early lead. The Blue Devils doubled their lead at 14:09 when Marcus Ortiz took a sharp-angled shot that was saved by Erickson but Sean Leonard put home the rebound from the top of the left circle.

Fredonia extended its lead to three minutes later as the Devils cycled the puck from right to left at the point from Ben Casale to Ortiz. He took a shot that was redirected out in front by Samuel Wilbur off the right post and in for the 3-0 lead. The Roos held a 12-11 shots advantage but the visitors took the lead into the locker room.

Just over six minutes into the middle period the Roos nearly got on the board as Tyler Bullard rang a shot off the right post but the game remained 3-0. Minutes later Joe Deveny also ripped a shot off the left post on the power play. Neither team could find the back of the net in the middle period as the Blue Devils held their lead after 40 minutes.

The Roos (7-14-2) got one back at 11:02 of the third as Deveny picked off a pass in the Blue Devil defensive zone and went top shelf for his second goal in as many days. Less than two minutes later Fredonia responded as Jacob Haynes played the puck to Wilbur on his left who buried his second of the game. Jamie Young also earned a helper on the play.

Canton pulled the goalie with 3:05 remaining but 13 seconds later Mackenzie McAvoy scored a short-handed empty net goal to seal the win. Trenton Yule added a power play goal for the Roos 24 seconds later off a pass from Tyler Ralph for the 5-2 final.

Anton Rosen made 33 saves in the win for the Blue Devils. Erickson turned aside eight shots in the first period, while Austin Washkurak made 15 saves over the final two frames.

The men's hockey team closes out its season next weekend with a home-and-home series v. Oswego State. The Roos travel to Oswego on Friday before hosting the Lakers on Saturday. Both puck drops are scheduled for 7 p.m.
