Canton, NY – Alfred University used a strong second quarter to earn a 26-2 victory in the season opener for both teams on Saturday afternoon.
Jake Lynch led the Saxons with five goals and two assists in the first half, while Joe Fornataro added four goals.
Josh Yelvington netted the Roos lone tally as they trailed 14-1 at intermission.
The Saxons added nine third quarter goals, while their defense locked down the Roos offense. SUNY Canton bounced back in the four quarter with a
Trevor Hughes goal off a feed from
Kyle Smith leading to the 26-2 final.
Lynch led all players with 11 points on nine goals and two assists, while Fornataro added seven points on five goals and two helpers. Derek Bishopp also added a hat trick for Alfred.
Smith led the Roos with five ground balls, while
Brandon Rodee added four.
Nick Vasilopoulos forced a team-best two turnovers.
Kody Kocsis made 16 saves over the first 39:15, while
Brennan Bueno stopped one shot over the final 20:45. Drew Gardner turned aside six shots while allowing just one goal over the first 49:30 for the win, while Chris Doktor and Brandon Smith combined to play the final 11:30.
