Seven Straight: Seniors Lead Men’s Basketball Past Delhi in OT, 87-81

Canton, NY – Sam Annorh posted a game-high 35 points and Rashad Richardson and Romario Fletcher both finished with double-doubles to lead the Roos to an 87-81 overtime win against visiting SUNY Delhi on Senior Day on Sunday.

Annorh recorded five of his 35 points in the extra session as four different Roos scored after regulation. Following a Hamed Guitti jumper to give the Broncos the early lead in OT, the Roos scored 11 of the next 13 points including nine consecutive to open a convincing 86-79 lead, securing the win.

Canton (17-8), winners of seven straight and 12 of their last 13, jumped out to a quick 16-4 lead just 4:21 into the contest after Annorh and Rashad Richardson hooked up for a thunderous alley-oop on Senior Day. The Roos started 7-for-9 from the field and 2-for-3 from three-point range during the opening charge.

Canton extended its lead to 13 after Ibu Smith hit a three-pointer off a screen on a baseline out-of-bounds play with two on the shot clock.  The Roos led by as many as 14 midway through the opening half.

The Broncos (13-17) chipped away at the deficit and trimmed the Canton lead to just 47-45 at halftime with some incredibly sharp shooting. Delhi shot 63 percent from the field (19-for-30) and 63 percent (5-for-8) from three-point range in the first half, while Canton also hit 50 percent (8-for-16) of its attempts from distance.

Delhi nailed a trey out of halftime to take their first lead of the game, but Annorh quickly responded with a long ball of his own and a layup from Haye knotted the game at 50. The Broncos opened an eight-point lead early in the second half, but SUNY Canton once again responded tying the game at 67 with 7:12 remaining in regulation.

Neither team led by more than four the remainder of the second half. With Delhi leading 75-73, Richardson knotted the game at 75 after collecting his own miss on a put back. After missing a pair of 1-and-1's, the Roos had the final possession of regulation but Annorh's contested three fell short just before the buzzer.

Annorh paced all players with 35 points hitting six of his 13 three-points attempts to go with seven assists as he played all 45 minutes. Richardson and Romario Fletcher both finished with double-doubles tallying 17 points-12 rebounds and 12 points-12 boards, respectively. Adrian Williams chipped in with 18 points on four treys.

Delhi shot 51 percent from the field in the contest but the Roos forced the Broncos to turn the ball over 16 times, while Canton committed just six turnovers of its own. This led to a 20-10 advantage in points off turnovers. The Roos hauled down 22 of their 45 rebounds on the offensive glass leading to 23 second chance points. Meanwhile, the Delhi bench outscored the Roo reserves, 23-5.

David Haye paced the Broncos with 27 points shooting 7-for-12 from behind the arc, while Guitti (20 points, 14 rebounds) and Temitayo Awosika (14 points, 12 rebounds) both tallied double-doubles.

The Roos honored their five seniors Phillip Wright, Sam Annorh, Rashad Richardson, Romario Fletcher and Laquan Robinson (missing from photo) prior to today's contest.

"I couldn't be happier for our five seniors," Head Coach Ben Thompson said. "They played so hard tonight and competed so well in their final game in the Roos House. Our fans were awesome and sent these guys out on such a high note with their support! What these seniors have done and the impact they have made on this program will be echoed for years to come. From all of Roo Nation, thank you seniors!"
