Fletcher’s 13th Double-Double & Strong Second Half Lead Men’s Hoops to Win at Vermont Tech

Randolph, VT – The SUNY Canton men's basketball team outscored host Vermont Tech by 23 points after halftime to earn a 63-44 road win on Tuesday evening.

After struggling offensively in the opening half shooting just 22 percent from the field, the Roos went into intermission trailing the Knights 26-22. Canton rebounded to shoot 41 percent in the second half, while holding Vermont Tech to 22 percent shooting.

The Roos (15-8) scored the first five points out of half to take a 27-26 lead. With Vermont Tech leading 36-34 with 14:44 to play, Canton went on a decisive 15-1 run over the next five minutes to take a 49-37 lead midway through the half after a free throw from Deon Foster. Five different players scored during the spurt for the Roos.

Vermont Tech (14-16) was unable to trim the deficit to single digits the remainder of the game as the Roos earned the 63-44 victory.

Romario Fletcher posted his 13th double-double of the season leading all players with 17 points and 16 rebounds. Sam Annorh chipped in 12 points, while Walt Jeter added 10 points and eight rebounds.

Lewis Holey paced the hosts with 14 points and 16 rebounds, while Dietric Grant also recorded a double-double on 12 points and 12 boards. Vermont Tech held a 55-44 advantage on the glass.

Canton forced the Knights into 25 turnovers, while committing just 11 of their own, which led to a 29-7 edge in points off turnovers.

"I was really disappointed with our effort in the first half; credit goes to Vermont Tech and how hard they played," Head Coach Ben Thompson said. "We were much more focused in the second half and we were able to gut out a win, in an incredible environment."

The men's basketball team is back in action on Saturday when it hosts Villa Maria College at 2 p.m. in the Roos House. Stay up to date with the latest news directly from the SUNY Canton Athletics department by "liking" us on Facebook and "following" our TwitterInstagram and YouTube accounts.
