CHS BOX SCORE
Canton, NY – Kyle Matsumoto scored a pair of goals and
Kasey Kulczycki finished with a goal and two assists as the SUNY Canton men's hockey team earned a 6-2 win v. Stevenson University on Saturday evening in the Roos House.
The Roos (7-10-2) got on the board first at 14:59 of the opening period.
J.P. Langlois found Kulczycki at the far boards as he skated away from net and rifled a shot that Matsumoto redirected home at the bottom of the left circle beating Mustang goaltender Pierce Dushenko. Stevenson (8-8-2) held a slim 12-8 shots advantage in the opening period but the Roos took the lead to the locker room.
Canton doubled its lead just 1:15 into the middle period when
Josh Sova picked off a pass behind the Stevenson net and hit
Vili-Jesper Koivula with a pass in the slot who buried his team-leading 12th goal of the season.
Five minutes later Matsumoto tallied his second goal of the night and his second shorthanded marker of the year as he picked off a pass at the near boards, skated into the zone and slid the puck between the five-hole of Dushenko at the right circle.
At the 15:10 mark of the middle period
Joe Deveny played the puck down the near boards to Kulczycki who took a shot from the bottom of the right circle. The rebound went right to
Patrick Farnan crashing at the far post as he put the puck past the stick of Dushenko into the open net.
Stevenson got on the board at 8:23 of the third when they cycled the puck from right to left in the neutral zone and Doug Rose left a drop off pass for Mike Davis who rang a shot off the post as it was ruled to have crossed the goal line. Justin Stelzer also earned a helper on the play.
The Roos regained the four-goal advantage three minutes later in a 2-on-1 situation. Deveny fed the puck to Kulczycki to his left as he beat the goalie far post over the glove.
Davis added his second of the game for the Mustangs at the 16:26 mark off passes from Jake Lainesse and Nick Bohatiuk to get within 5-2.
After the Roos called timeout with 2:58 remaining the Mustangs pulled the goalie, but
Tyler Bullard cashed in on an empty-netter off a pass from just over a minute later to seal the win.
Josh Erickson finished with 36 saves to improve to 5-1-1 on the season. Dushenko made 14 saves over 35:07, while Dustyn Moyer turned aside nine shots over the final 23:31 for Stevenson. The Roos special teams had a strong night going 1-for-3 on the power play, 6-for-6 on the penalty kill while also scoring shorthanded.
