Women’s Volleyball Opens 2016 in Home Tournament v. Potsdam

Canton, NY – The SUNY Canton women's volleyball team dropped their season opener 3-0 (25-20, 25-18, 25-17) to visiting SUNY Potsdam on Friday.
 
The visiting Bears (2-0) jumped out to a quick 12-5 start and extended their lead to as many as 10 at 16-6 in the opening set. The Roos (0-1) stormed back behind some strong defense and pinpoint hitting to get within 22-18 late. However, visiting Potsdam took the opening set 25-20.
 
The Bears continued their strong start of set play tallying six of the first seven points and opened a 22-14 lead. SUNY Canton once again bounced back with four consecutive points with strong play in the middle but Potsdam responded with three straight points of their own to secure the 25-18 second set victory.
 
Potsdam opened the third set 17-9 and completed the sweep with a 25-17 win.
 
Kelsy Cornish (Honeoye, NY) led the way with 12 kills and 17 digs, while Haley Riley (Lowville, NY) also registered double digit kills with 10 and added six digs. Jenna Roat (Penfield, NY) recorded a team-best 20 digs, while Peyton Robinson (Bloomfield, NY) dished out 30 assists to go with nine digs. Melissa McMaster (Pittsford, NY) chipped in with eight digs in her first match in a Roo uniform as senior Morgan Wicks (Hartford, NY) tallied 14 digs.
 
The Roos are back in action on Saturday when they host Southern Vermont College at 10 a.m. and SUNY Poly at 2 p.m., both in the Roos House.
