Brockport, NY – The SUNY Canton women's volleyball earned a pair of sweeps on the opening day of the Brockport Invitational on Friday.
The Roos (5-4) earned a 3-0 (28-26, 25-16, 25-23) win against Hilbert College (1-4) before securing a 3-0 (25-18, 25-9, 25-16) sweep of Medaille College (2-9).
Game 1 – Box Score
Neither team led by more than two points in an extremely tight opening set until the Roos rattled off three straight points to open up a 24-20 advantage. The Hawks battled back with five consecutive points as SUNY Canton faced set point but scored four of the final five points to secure a 28-26 first set victory.
Hilbert jumped out to a 7-3 advantage in the second frame and led 11-7 midway through the set. SUNY Canton scored 10 of 12 points after trailing by three to take a 19-14 advantage and assure a 25-16 second set win. The Roos led 15-8 in the third set and
Haley Riley (Lowville, NY) closed out the sweep with a kill to earn the 25-23 victory in the final frame.
Riley led all players with 13 kills hitting .370 on 27 attack attempts, while
Melissa McMaster (Pittsford, NY) posted 10 kills hitting .389.
Shea Norton (Batavia, NY) finished with nine kills and
Kelsy Cornish (Honeoye, NY) added 21 digs to go with her six kills.
Jenna Roat (Penfield, NY) recorded a game-high 25 digs, while
Peyton Robinson (Bloomfield, NY) dished out 35 assists in addition to her five digs.
Game 2 – Box Score
The Roos handled the Mavericks in their second match of the day earning wins by scores of 25-18, 25-9 and 25-16. SUNY Canton produced 42 kills including 29 kills to just seven hitting errors over the first two sets.
Riley once again led the way with 14 kills hitting .522 (14-2-23), while Norton produced the second double digit kill performance of her young career with 10 kills without a single error to hit .588. Cornish chipped in with seven kills and 17 digs, while Robinson posted a double-double on 35 assists and 12 digs. Roat tallied 16 digs and McMaster recorded four kills and four blocks.
