Canton, NY – The SUNY Canton men's lacrosse team outscored visiting Alfred State College 5-1 in the third quarter to earn a 13-10 victory in the USCAA Tournament championship game on Sunday afternoon.
SUNY Canton (7-6) got on the board first as
Kyle Smith (Evans Mills, NY) buried his 20th of the season 3:58 into the contest. The Roos (7-6) scored two of the next three goals off the sticks of
Jack Elberty (Canton, NY) and
Trenton Yule (Oswego, NY) to take a 3-1 lead.
The Pioneers (4-11) answered with three straight goals to open their first lead of the game at 4-3 just under three minutes into the second quarter. The teams exchanged a pair of goals as
Luke DeGaetano (Canandaigua, NY) and Yule scored as the Roos headed to intermission trailing 6-5.
The Roos outscored Alfred State 5-1 in the third period to take a 10-6 lead into the final quarter.
Chris Gamble (Carthage, NY) was key to the run caging three goals during the key stretch. The teams traded three goals apiece over the final 15 minutes as SUNY Canton earned the 13-10 victory.
Five different players recorded three points or more led by six on three goals and three assists from Yule. Smith chipped in five points on two goals and three assists. Gamble and Elberty posted four points each and DeGaetano added three.
Gamble led all players with 12 ground balls and three caused turnovers, while
Taylor Mustizer (Adams, NY) added eight ground balls and two caused turnovers.
Brandon Rodee (Canton, NY) was also effective in the midfield with eight ground balls.
Andrew Fiske (Winthrop, NY) made eight saves in his fourth win of the season, while Ryan Amidon turned aside 15 shots in defeat.
