Canton, NY – The SUNY Canton men's lacrosse team outscored visiting Alfred State College by six in the second quarter on its way to a 17-10 win on Saturday.
The Roos (5-5), winners of five of their past seven contests, improve to .500 on the season. The Pioneers drop to 3-10.
Trailing 5-4 heading to the second quarter the Roos took control scoring six of the next seven goals to turn a deficit into a commanding 11-6 halftime lead.
Skye Sunday (Akwesasne, NY) had three first half scores, while
Kyle Smith (Evans Mills, NY) had two goals and four assists in the opening 30 minutes.
Alfred State would never get closer than five the remainder of the game in a well-balanced effort from SUNY Canton. The Roos were dominant picking up 55 ground balls compared to just 31 for the visitors. SUNY Canton was a force in the faceoff circle (18-11) as
Jeffrey Perez (Bronx, NY) went 12-for-22 and
Devin Gruneisen (Potsdam, NY) was an efficient 6-for-7. The hosts were also successful in transition going 19-for-22 on clear attempts.
Smith tallied his second double digit point outing of the season with 10 on four goals and six assists, while
Trenton Yule (Oswego, NY) was the high scorer on the afternoon with five goals and an assist. Sunday had four goals and an assist, while
Jack Elberty (Canton, NY) scored twice and assisted two other goals.
Gruneisen and Yule combined for 17 ground balls, while
Brandon Rodee (Canton, NY),
Taylor Mustizer (Adams, NY) and
Andrew Bowes (Irondequoit, NY) recorded five pickups apiece. Rodee and Bowes each forced a game-high three turnovers.
Andrew Fiske (Winthrop, NY) had a strong outing between the pipes stopping 16 shots in his second win of the season, while Ryan Amidon made 12 saves for the Pioneers.
