Curry Nets Game-Winner to Open Independent Championship Series v. Daniel Webster

Nashua, NH – George Curry (Schaumburg, IL) deflected home a shot from Josh Sova (Oswego, NY) at the point 2:26 into overtime to lift visiting SUNY Canton to a 4-3 victory in game one of the Division III Independents tournament Friday night at Conway Arena.

Curry's winner gave the Roos (6-18-3) a 1-0 series lead in the best of two tourney which concludes tomorrow night at 7:30 p.m. Should Daniel Webster (3-18-0) score a victory, the teams would then face off in a 20-minute "mini game" to determine a champion. A win or overtime tie would give the Roos the title.

SUNY Canton led 2-1 after one period and led 3-1 early on in the second before the Eagles rallied midway through the stanza to knot things at 3-3 heading into the third.

Louie Puig (Chicago, IL) stopped 26 shots to earn the win in goal for the Roos, while Morgan Hudson turned aside 36 shots for Daniel Webster. SUNY Canton outshot the Eagles, 40-29 on the night.

Kyle Dora (Saranac Lake, NY) struck for Canton from the point just 53 seconds into the game off passes from Sova and Joey Vocino (Pickering, ON). The hosts tied it at the 9:06 mark on a Joe Hawkins wrister, assisted from Clay Plyler and Tre Mason.

Erik Hallin (Goteborg, Sweden) answered for the Roos three minutes later off a Ben Beasley (Burlington, ON) feed for the 2-1 game after one.

SUNY Canton upped it to 3-1 on a Vocino shot off the rebound of a Sova shot on the power play 5:39 into the second. Joe Deveny (Stouffville, ON) also earned a helper on the play. DWC tied it with a pair of scores 2:06 apart. Michael Rodriguez popped home a Steven Smoltz rebound at 11:07 and David Downie tied it at 13:13 off a Smoltz pass near the left post.

DWC had a golden chance to earn the win when Canton was whistled for a pair of penalties with 1:02 remaining in regulation that carried into overtime but the Roos penalty kill unit came up huge.

SUNY Canton earned a decisive upper hand on face offs (47-31) with Kasey Kulczycki (Laval, QUE) the high man winning 20 of 28 draws. These two teams will have a rematch on Saturday at 7:30 p.m. at Conway Arena.
