CHS BOX SCORE

Nashua, NH – The SUNY Canton men's hockey team twice overcame a three goal deficit to earn a 4-4 overtime tie on Saturday evening as they won the NCAA Division III Independent Championship against host Daniel Webster College at Conway Arena.

With the tie on Saturday the Roos (6-17-4) won the best of two series after earning a 4-3 overtime victory on Friday.

The host Eagles (3-18-1) scored two first period goals 2:40 apart. Steven Smoltz got the scoring started at 8:13 on his third point in the last two nights burying his third goal of the season. David Downie doubled the DWC lead on his second goal in two nights. Despite SUNY Canton holding a 15-5 shots on goal edge, the Eagles led 2-0 after one.

Matt Ho made it a three goal game on his first of the season on the power play at 6:15 of the middle period. Just eight seconds after the DWC goal SUNY Canton went on the power play and was quick to respond when Joey Vocino (Pickering, ON) lit the lamp for the fourth time on the season off the set up from Ben Beasley (Burlington, ON).

Just 22 seconds later Zach Paisley regained the three goal advantage for the Eagles. Joe Deveny (Stouffville, ON) got the Roos within two with 5:33 left in the second off passes from Josh Sova (Oswego, NY) and Taylor Pickering (Marine City, MI). The Roos continued to control the shot advantage 33-13 after 40 minutes of play.

Tyler Ralph (Middletown, NJ) slotted his fourth of the season off a pass from Brett Costello (Lombardy, ON) at 9:08 of the third to draw the visitors within one. Just over three minutes later Vocino put home his second power play goal of the night to tie things up at four apiece. Beasley and Dylan Rosen (Clarkston, MI) earned helpers on the play.

SUNY Canton was whistled for hooking with 1:07 left in regulation but was able to kill off the rest of the penalty and held a 4-2 shots advantage in the extra session.

Louie Puig (Chicago, IL) turned aside 22 shots in his final game as a Roo, while Anthony D'Urso made 49 stops for the Eagles. This closes out the 2015-16 season for both teams.
