Middlebury, VT – Joe Deveny scored his fourth goal of the season but the SUNY Canton men's hockey team was unable to overcome an early deficit in a 4-1 loss to Manhattanville College in the opening round of the Middlebury Classic on Friday.

The Valiants (7-5-0) got on the board midway through the opening period when Teagan Waugh circled behind the net and banked a shot in off Roo goaltender
Austin Washkurak. Eric Berglund doubled the Manhattanville lead four minutes later when he intercepted a pass at the blue line and snapped a hard wrister from between the circles at 14:24.

With 3:30 remaining in the opening period
Kasey Kulczycki tipped the post with a shot in transition but it was the Valiants who took a 2-0 lead into first intermission.

Manhattanville made it 3-0 when the puck deflected to Adam Platt at the blue line as he skated in alone on a breakaway deking Washkurak for the three goal advantage midway through the second. The Valiants added their second goal on the penalty kill with 1:54 remaining in the third period off the stick of Waugh.

Deveny got the Roos (2-9-2) on the scoreboard with 38 seconds remaining when
Trenton Yule fed the puck from the right to Deveny at the left circle. He snapped a shot into the top corner as
Zach Pease was also credited with an assist on the play.

Washkurak made 13 saves over the first 29:48 allowing three scores, while Erickson made 13 stops over the final 30:12 surrendering one goal. Kyle Redmond turned aside 18 shots in the win for the Valiants.
