Buffalo, NY – Senior captain
Sam Annorh (Queens, NY) scored a career-high 37 points to lead the SUNY Canton men's basketball team to a 99-90 road victory at D'Youville College on Sunday afternoon.
The 37 points by Annorh are the most by a SUNY Canton player in nearly six years. Tony Valentin scored 38 points for the Roos in an 86-80 loss at the University of Maine at Machias on January 21, 2011.
The hosts jumped out to an early five point lead midway through the opening half after Steve Kunelius hit from deep. The Roos would respond scoring 14 of the next 16 points including an 8-0 mini run from
Victor Bakre (Bronx, NY) that included a pair of three-pointers and a layup to open up a seven point lead at 28-21. SUNY Canton extended its lead to as many as 13 as it took a 45-35 lead into halftime.
Annorh led all players with 19 points hitting on eight of his 10 field goal attempts in the opening half. Bakre and
Romario Fletcher (Queens, NY) chipped in with 13 and 11 points, respectively, combining to shoot 10-for-17 as the Roos shot 51 percent as a team in the opening half. Jeremy VanDuluitgaarden led the Spartans with 12 points.
D'Youville trimmed the deficit to as little as six early on in the second half but the Roos used a 24-10 run over the next seven minutes to extend their lead to as many as 20 at 73-53 with 12:26 to play. The Spartans would never get closer than double digits the remainder of the way until Jake Socha hit a three-pointer with 16 seconds remaining for the 99-90 final.
"Today we had a much better collective effort from our guys," Head Coach
Ben Thompson said. "Getting road wins are very difficult, so we are encouraged. However, we still need to improve and move forward in the right direction."
Annorh led all players with 37 points and eight assists on 13-for-22 shooting including a 4-for-9 mark from long distance. Fletcher recorded his second consecutive double-double with 22 points and 14 rebounds, while Bakre posted a career-high 23 points on 9-for-13 shooting.
Rashad Richardson (Rochester, NY) chipped in nine points.
VanDuluitgaarden paced the Spartans with 21 points, while Socha and Darrius Hartzog joined him in double figures with 20 and 10 points, respectively.
The Roos shot 51 percent from the field compared to 46 percent for the Spartans. Canton held a 51-44 edge in rebounding, which led to a 22-12 advantage in second chance points. The Roos dominated inside outscoring D'Youville 88-52 in the paint.
