Canton, NY – The SUNY Canton men's hockey team opens its season on Friday night when it hosts SUNY Cortland in the first half of a home weekend doubleheader at 7 p.m. in the Roos House.
The Roos welcome back 16 returners coupled with 12 new players to the lineup during the 2016-17 season. Last season SUNY Canton played in 13 games decided by a goal or less, nine of which went to overtime.
Josh Sova (Oswego, NY) will serve as captain this season with
Kyle Dora (Saranac Lake, NY) and
Thomas Crabtree (Knoxville, TN) donning the A's on their jerseys.
The Roos welcome back three of their top four point scorers and seven of their top nine. Sova led the team in points (23) and goals (10) a season ago, while
Ben Beasley (Burlington, ON) led the team with 15 assists from the blue line to go with his five goals.
Kyle Matsumoto (Walnut, CA) and
Nick Lepone (Richmondhill, ON) also return after double digit point performances a season ago.

Alex Boak brings in his first recruiting class. The group features nine freshmen and three transfers, two sophomores and a junior.
The freshmen forwards include
Vili-Jesper Koivula (Pinsiö, Finland),
Tyler Bullard (Ballston Spa, NY),
Brad Reitter (Grand Rapids, MI) and
Patrick Farnan (Clifton Park, NY). Freshmen blue liners include
Luke Hincenbergs (Toronto, ON),
Stuart Fierheller (Lindsay, ON) and
David Hopfer (Tonawanda, NY). The Roos bring in two new goaltenders who are expected to fight for time in
Michael Cerasuolo (Montreal, QUE) and
Austin Washkurak (Oakville, ON).
The incoming transfers include sophomore forward
Zach Pease (Toronto, ON – Fredonia), sophomore defenseman
Marcus Baird (Oakville, ON – Finlandia University) and junior defenseman
Mitch McLean (Marietta, GA – Franklin Pierce University).
The Roos will play a 25 game schedule that includes 15 home contests as they finish the season with five of their final seven contests in the friendly confines of the Roos House.
