Cornish and Riley’s 61 Kills Lead Roos to Wins over Oswego & Potsdam

Canton, NY – Seniors Kelsy Cornish (Honeoye, NY) and Haley Riley (Lowville, NY) combined for 61 kills on the day as the SUNY Canton women's volleyball team earned a pair of victories against visiting Oswego State and SUNY Potsdam in their home invitational on Saturday in the Roos House.

The Roos (13-12) defeated Oswego (12-11) in four sets (25-21, 22-25, 26-24, 25-15) before sweeping (28-26-25-23, 25-14) the Bears (13-11).

Match 1 – Box Score
The Roos jumped out to a quick 4-0 lead in the opening set behind a pair of aces from Peyton Robinson and kills from Haley Riley (Lowville, NY) and Marissa Ixtlahuac (Carthage, NY). Oswego State took a 12-11 advantage but the Roos rattled off five consecutive points including three consecutive aces from freshman Jenna Roat (Penfield, NY). The Lakers got within one at 21-20 but SUNY Canton scored four of the sets' final five points including a pair of putdowns from Riley to take the first frame, 25-20.

SUNY Canton saw the second set slip away after leading 21-15 as the visitors produced eight straight points to turn a six point deficit into a two point lead securing the second frame 25-22. The third stanza was a game of runs as the Roos led 16-12 but five straight from the Lakers gave Oswego State a 17-16 edge. SUNY Canton scored eight of the next nine points to lead 24-18 but the Lakers tallied six straight points facing set point to knot the game at 24 apiece. The Roos finished strong as a kill by Morgan Wicks (Hartford, NY) and block assist from Melissa McMaster (Pittsford, NY) and Peyton Robinson (Bloomfield, NY) closed out the third set.

The Roos opened up a 19-11 advantage in the fourth set cruising to a 25-15 victory to close out the match. Kelsy Cornish (Honeoye, NY) led all players with 17 kills despite committing 10 errors. Riley posted nine kills to go with her seven digs. Roat established a new career high with 36 digs, while Wicks was also strong defensively with 18 digs. Robinson paced the attack with 33 assists.

Match 2 – Box Score
With the Bears leading 18-14 in the opening set SUNY Canton responded with six straight points on three kills from Riley and a pair of putdowns from McMaster to open up a two point edge. Potsdam fought off match point at 24-22 with three points of their own but the Roos responded with four of the five next points following a timeout to earn the first set win, 28-26. Cornish finished off the decisive point on a kill from Robinson.

SUNY Canton used their momentum from the opening frame to jump out to a 7-2 lead in the middle set but the Bears bounced back to tie the game at 11 apiece. Trailing 23-21 late in the frame SUNY Canton scored the final four points all of Potsdam errors. The Roos jumped out to a 20-12 lead in the decisive third set on their way to a 25-14 victory.

Riley led the attack with 19 kills hitting .500 (19-1-36), while Cornish recorded 16 kills to go with her 17 digs. Robinson dished out 43 assists, while Roat added 19 digs.

The women's volleyball team returns to action on Sunday at 10 a.m. when it hosts Lebanon Valley College on Senior Day in the Roos House.
