Canton, NY – The SUNY Canton women's volleyball team was locked in a battle with crosstown rival St. Lawrence University that went the distance but the visiting Roos came up just short falling in five sets to the host Saints 3-2 (25-22, 21-25, 28-26, 21-25, 6-15) on Friday evening.
After trailing 11-4 in the opening set the Roos rallied to earn a hard fought opening frame 25-22. The Saints battled back to even the match with a 25-21 second stanza win. SUNY Canton struck for a match-high for either team with 15 kills in a thrilling 28-26 third set victory. St. Lawrence once again showed their mental toughness evening the match again and used that momentum to earn the win 15-6 in the final set.
Three Roos finished with double digit kills as
Kelsy Cornish (Honeoye, NY),
Morgan Bills (Walworth, NY) and
Jenea Shoemaker (Walworth, NY) posted 12, 11 and 10 kills, respectively.
Robyn Carroll (Bowmanville, ON) led the way with 19 digs, while
Kiana Archer (Plattsburgh, NY) and
Lindsay Bryer (Wilson, NY) combined for 17 digs.
Peyton Robinson dished out 42 assists on the evening.
The women's volleyball team will host two matches on the second day of the Canton Classic on Saturday in the Roos House. SUNY Canton takes on Rochester Institute of Technology at 12 p.m. followed by a 4 p.m. matchup with the University of Rochester.
