Women’s Volleyball Makes it Seven Straight Wins to Open Season

Potsdam, NY – The SUNY Canton women's volleyball team used a pair of sweeps against Johnson State College and Regis College on Friday evening to open play at the Victory Promotions Invitational hosted by SUNY Potsdam.

The Roos (7-0) earned a decisive victory vs. the Badgers 3-0 (25-9, 25-10, 25-16) before taking down the Pride in straight sets 3-0 (25-12, 25-10, 25-5).

Game 1 - Box
SUNY Canton jumped out to a quick start against Johnson State (1-3) surrendering just 19 total points over the opening two sets. The Roos floored 27 kills in those sets including 16 in the second frame. The team hit .386 overall in the match on 83 attack attempts, while showing off a stellar service game recording 19 service aces.

Kelsy Cornish (Honeoye, NY) continued her hot start to the season posting a match-best 11 kills. Jenea Shoemaker (Walworth, NY) had a monster outing putting down a career-high seven balls. Morgan Bills (Walworth, NY) spearheaded the SUNY Canton service game with six aces, while Robyn Carroll (Bowmanville, ON) and Kiana Archer (Plattsburgh, NY) added four and three aces, respectively.

Cornish and Carroll proved to be strong defensively combining for 12 digs, while freshman Peyton Robinson (Bloomfield, NY) directed the offense to the tune of 36 assists (12.0/set).

Game 2 - Box
The Roos continued to show team balance making quick work of Regis College (3-3) in the nightcap. SUNY Canton was once again productive from the service line out-acing its opponents 15-2.
Cornish, Bills and Haley Riley (Carthage, NY) led the way offensively with eight kills each. Robinson recorded 26 assists to go with five aces. Meanwhile, Archer and Carroll added four and three aces, respectively. Cornish, Carroll and Lindsay Bryer (Wilson, NY) combined for 25 digs.
The women's volleyball team is back in action on the second day of the Victory Promotions Invitational on Saturday. They square off with Cegep Heritage College at 11 a.m. followed by a 1 p.m. matchup with Utica College.
